By Joanne Winer The annual Operation Hero Comfort Silent Auction to raise funds for packages for the troops in harm's way will be held Saturday December 9 at the Quartzsite Improvement Assoc. (QIA) starting at 11 a.m. Dona- tions from vendors, businesses and individuals have been coming in and this year should be at least as many if not more items than last year thanks to the generosity of our community! The Silent Auction is a yearly benefi t to raise money to send out the packages to the adopted troop units that Operation Hero Comfort sends out every other week. Each unit (currently fi ve) receives two boxes every two weeks--one food and one non-food, for a total of at least 4 boxes every month. Some months, like around Christmas, they receive extra boxes with holiday trees, ornaments, stockings, cards etc. The boxes include anything that would make the troops' Christmas a merrier one, wherever they are. The boxes cost over $17 each to send, and often the money is also used to buy items for the packages that do not get donated. The Auction is also a place where they set up a table with cards that you can sign for the troops. They sure appreciate getting kind words from home. There is also a 50/50 raffl e, and door prizes given out all day. At 4 p.m. the bid sheets are gathered up and the person with the highest bid gets to buy the item and take it home. They have some really great items for this year's auction. There will also be a box at the entrance where you can donate any items that you might want to give to the troops and they will be put in the next boxes to go out before Christmas. The Friends of the Quartzsite Food Bank is also having their Soup and Chowder festival at the same place (QIA) on the same day, which Silent Auction for the troops Dec. 9 - 11 am starts at 12 p.m. The Silent Auction will be held in the Main Hall start- ing at 11 a.m. Come on over to the Q.I.A. for the afternoon, taste some great soup and chowders, bid on your items at the auction and buy them, then make sure to watch the Christmas Light Parade at 7 p.m.!!
