Author Lee Smith, who began writing stories when she was 9, has written 17 works of fiction, including Fair and Tender Ladies, e Last Girls and Guests on Earth. She and her husband writer Hal Crowther live in Hillsborough. It was in Hillsborough that Smith met new Grand Master Speed Hallman and his wife, Susan. ey were neighbors for years until the Hallmans moved earlier this year to Wadesboro. e Hallmans invited Smith to speak as part of the weekend festivities leading up to his installation on Dec, 2 as North Carolina's 165th Grand Master of Masons. While the Board of General Purposes met below, she read from her new memoir, Dimestore, and autographed copies for the attendees. Susan Hallman gave each attendee a gift bag containing a small jar of pimiento cheese Susan made from Smith's mother's recipe. And she included the recipe! Author Lee Smith reads from her new memoir, "Dimestore" to spouses and friends of Masons mee ng at the Board of General Purposes at Eagle #19. The reading included a treat: some pi- miento cheese made from Smith's mother's recipe.
