M y name is Brendan Morrison '19, a junior accounting and finance student and the current Eminent Archon of the New Hampshire Beta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon. During the spring semester, I spent time with the executive council changing the culture of our chapter in addition to holding our members more accountable. This rolled into the fall semester and lifted the social probation that's been applied to our chapter for a year and a half. Coming into this semester off of probation, the executive council and I knew we would have to uphold the qualities that got us here, while using our social privileges to motivate our members further. We implemented a strict incentive program based on a percentage of brothers' attendance at our events, as well as events hosted by other organizations. We have had great success so far, and it has helped us continue in the right direction and enhance SAE's image. This improved image has gained us 18 new members, who are already upholding the standards of a True Gentleman. As we continue to better ourselves as a chapter, we will continue to enhance the activities that got us to where we are today: community service, philanthropy, and the Greek Performance and Excellence Program (GPEP). We have taken a quantity over quality approach to community service. The more events we create for our members, the more opportunities there are to be involved, and we don't discriminate events based on size. During my tenure as EA, we are planning on doing a highway cleanup, Durham cleanup, Rye Beach cleanup, Chapter Advisor Tom Johnson's '75 yard work, cleaning out the police station, contributing to SHARP walks, among others. As for philanthropy, we have done the opposite: quality over quantity. The chapter decided we'd rather have two large events that we put some serious time and effort into to promote and organize the event, while making it something people genuinely want to go to. We are all "poor college students," so we are trying to make events that "poor college students" want to attend. Spring 2016, we hosted the Pike vs. SAE hockey game, and we are in the midst of organizing the second one for spring 2018. We hosted a spike ball tournament for the Firefighters Union philanthropy, Operation Warm. We are teamed up with our sorority neighbors, Alpha Chi Omega, to host "Pizza Pies with Alpha Chi's and SAE Guys" in late November, an all-you-can-eat pizza event from Durham's own Durham House of Pizza (DHOP). On a more serious note, we received word one of our alumni was diagnosed with untreatable cancer. He is from the north shore Massachusetts area. We and the alumni of his class are planning a big fundraiser, including a raffle of items donated by Bud Light and a few other beer companies. One of our members works at local bar in his hometown, Scorpions, or "Scorps." The owner is very involved and wants to help make a difference; he is the one reaching out to these companies for donations. Our chapter wants to raffle for various items, and we are looking for more donations in the meantime. We will also accept donations and other things to raffle. Anything and everything helps, even as simple as an idea for an event or an email to the family. I want to reiterate we do not profit from anything, and this is not for his treatment. He and his wife have two kids at home, ages 4 and less than a year old. This is to help his wife raise these children and get them through college. We hope to make this an annual event, and we hope to have great success. the lion's roar New Hampshire beta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon FALL 2017 New Hampshire Beta Looking to Improve through Philanthropy, Community Service Chapter Planning Event to Assist Alumnus with Terminal Cancer Members of our 2018-20 classes at UNH's annual Sexual Harassment and Rape Prevention Program (SHARPP) walk.
