A self- less brother volunteers his service without an egotistical motive or the expectation to be served in return. It is this virtue of selflessness upon which Alpha Sigma Phi's founders, Louis Manigualt, Horace Spangler Weiser, and Stephen Ormsby Rhea, built their gentleman's society. And it is this virtue that assures Mu Chapter will survive in its second century of existence. Brotherhood is the capacity of love that we have for one another, and that translates into important feelings of friendship, support, and understanding between brothers. This is the earmark of a solid and healthy fraternity. Men join fraternities to be included; for a fraternity to be successful, the members have to feel cared about and valued. Lack of this fraternal nurturing quickly creates disconnect in which brothers fall away and leave. I remember being a pledge… a pretty awkward pledge. I had never lived away from home or been away from my parents for any considerable length of time. Yes, awkward is the right word. I did not know how to act and I definitely had no fashion awareness. Then, two upperclass- men changed my world; selflessly, they groomed, taught, and mentored me; made me feel I mattered with their selfless acts. Those men helped better me so that I could become the man I am today. Mu has survived over 100 years. Its history is rich with brothers that have practiced selflessness time and time again. The chapter is as strong as it is today, and has experienced a renaissance of being one of the largest, most popular fraternities on campus because of the foundation of selflessness, inclusiveness, care, and mentoring. My challenge to you, brothers, and to all others who may read this, is to practice selflessness. You will experience more pleasure and joy from the way you make other people feel, rather than how they make you feel. Always give from the heart and with no expectation or desire for anything in return. This is the key to bettering the man. It should be the basis of every relation- ship. If a person truly cares about you, they'll get more pleasure from the way they make you feel, rather than the way you make them feel."
