Standard Bearer The Fall 2017 Eta Chapter of Sigma Chi at the University of Mississippi W e are experiencing a great 2017 fall semester. The most important priorities of our chapter are the character-building of our newly accepted pledges, the transition of leadership for the 2018 class, the many philanthropy opportunities—including campus, sorority, community, and fraternity events to raise money for incredible causes, and the academic success of each member. At Balfour, the Eta Chapter proudly accepted a Peterson Award. This is a very proud achievement for our chapter, because we have experienced much adversity in the past couple of years. The efforts of our brothers in the past year to rebuild our chapter and implement the true values and motives of Sigma Chi have led to more success and progress than we ever dreamed. We are proud of each and every man of our chapter, and we look forward to the incredible accomplishments and blessings of the year to come. Another achievement our chapter has seen over the past year is that we advanced to the second- highest fraternity GPA on campus. This is a direct result of the change in ambitions, priorities, and mindsets of every member of our chapter to focus on grades and future success before social or extracurricular activities. Academic success has become a huge priority. The Eta Chapter is proud to have completed formal recruitment and accepted a pledge class of 75 outstanding men. Our recruitment chairmen did a great job recruiting these guys over the summer, as well as the 2017 school year. This year's magister is Chris Hanneke '18, a senior from Ridgeland, Mississippi. Chris completed strenuous training over the summer and successfully became a United States Marine. We are excited to see how his new leadership and character-building knowledge will build these new pledges into true Sigma Chi men. This year, we have a significant number of (very active and involved) senior members who have completed internships all across the United States. They will be graduating in May and heading off to work with those companies for whom they interned. Also, we have several seniors who will be going to medical school and law school following graduation. Clay Wooley '17, our former consul and one of the most influential members of our chapter's history, has been named a member of the Board of Education for Sigma Chi Headquarters. We are honored that he is still involved and cares so much about the future of the Fraternity. Our social chairmen, James Sexton '18 and Kyle Armitage '18, have worked tirelessly to create a social schedule of the magnitude we have never seen before. From Eta Chapter brother bands to well-known DJs and bands from all over the U.S., we have had a great time socially. This year, we had a member of our chapter run for Mr. Ole Miss here on campus. Elections took place September 26, and he won! We had great support from our brothers for our senior candidate, Tucker Fox '18, a Memphis, Tennessee, senior who is majoring in banking and finance and has served on campus as an orientation leader and ambassador.
