Anne continues her adven- tures in "Anne of Green Ga- bles: The Good Stars," airing on PBS Thursday, Nov. 23. Based on L.M. Montgom- ery's beloved Canadian novel, "Anne of Green Gables: The Good Stars" follows Anne as she navigates the challenges of adolescence, including slee- povers, beauty foibles and boys. Audiences will love the charisma between the cast members, many of whom have returned for the sequel. John Kent Harrison of "Pope John Paul II" (2005) fame re- turns to write and direct. Ella Ballentine ("The Mon- ster," 2016) shines again as Anne Shirley. At the tender age of nine, Ballentine began her career in the Hallmark TV movie "Baby's First Christ- mas" (2012). As Anne, the young actress stars alongside the likes of Martin Sheen, the award-winning actor famous for his roles in "The Departed" (2006) and "The West Wing." Sheen reprises his role as Mat- thew Cuthbert, one of the ag- ing guardians of the feisty and independent redhead. Sara Botsford ("The Lizzie Borden Chronicles") stars as Marilla, Matthew's sister and Anne's co-guardian. After an initial reluctance at taking in the orphan — the Cuthberts were expecting a boy to help with the farm work — Marilla eventually forms a bond with her in the first film. Botsford says "The Good Stars" contin- ues this theme of family, ex- plaining that what makes the story unique is that the char- acters take care of each other and are kind to one another, forming their own unconven- tional family in the process. Julia Lalonde ("Odd Squad") plays Diana Barry, Anne's instant bosom buddy. Anne and Diana swear an oath to protect their friend- ship, but Anne's not sure it can survive boys or meddling friends. The depth of the girls' bond in the series lends a sweet layer to a classic story. Lalonde says that kids watch- ing the show should follow Anne's lead and take on new projects or things they want to accomplish without waiting for permission. Anne wishes to be a re- spectable and "sensible" young woman, but her pas- sion and steadfastness often get in her way. She hopes her 13th birthday will bring the ability to "make better choic- es." She tests that ability dur- ing her culinary misadven- tures and a dye job that goes wrong, turning her hair green. Try as she might, Anne still gets into a few wacky blunders. "[Anne's] growing up, she understands she needs to ma- ture," said Ballentine, who is 16 years old, in a promotional video for YTV. "She's devel- oped because she's been in Avonlea for so long. She's a bit more comfortable, but she's still kooky, crazy. She's matur- ing, as am I, so we're growing together." The film also delves into the ongoing tension between Anne and classmate Gilbert Blythe (Drew Haytaoglu, "Looks Just Like the Sun," 2015). The academic rivals face one another during dance class, much to Anne's chagrin. Gilbert is playful but arrogant, which infuriates Anne. Worse, his first attempt to get her attention was by tugging her pigtail and calling her "carrots," to which she re- sponded by smashing a slate over his head. Zoe Fraser ("The Curse of Clara: A Holiday Tale," 2015) returns as Anne's friend Ruby Gillis, and Amariah Faulkner ("Daniel Tiger's Neighbor- hood") reprises her role as Jane Andrews. Stefani Kim- ber, best known for her roles in "Remember" (2015) and "Cracked," plays Josie Pye, Anne's antagonistic frenemy who's always trying to take Anne down a notch. She's still quick to point out where Anne lacks manners or knowledge, adding that this must be because of her stint at the orphanage. "Anne of Green Gables" has seen more than two doz- en screen adaptations to date. It's twice been a Hollywood feature (a silent film in 1919 and a talkie in 1934) and a BBC miniseries (in 1952 and 1972). In 1956, CBC adapted the story into a musical, with a second production airing in 1958. In 1965, Harron, Camp- bell and Mavor Moore ex- panded the TV version into a full-length musical for the Charlottetown Festival, where it has been performed every year since, earning the Guin- ness World Record for longest running annual musical the- ater production. From silent movies to musi- cals, Anne Shirley's story con- tinues to entertain every gen- eration with heartfelt twists and turns. The TV movie re- boot of Montgomery's classic novel brings Anne Shirley into the limelight for a new gener- ation, revitalizing the story with her journey into adoles- cence. "Anne of Green Gables: The Good Stars" is a classic story about the perils and joys of growing up. It's a family fa- vorite you won't want to miss — catch it Thursday, Nov. 23, on PBS.
