The ohio state university page 5 T he Beta Phi Chapter has been busy throughout the past several months, focusing on our scholarly pursuits, contributions to the community, and commitment to leading lives of excellence. I hope to show you that we are campus leaders in academics, philanthropy, service, and social excellence in its broadest context. Although my words won't do complete justice, the men of Beta Phi are continuing the legacy of those who came before them by becoming the best men they can be. Continued Academic Excellence Per usual, Beta Phi continues to excel academically and remain a leader in the Greek community. We earned a 3.38 GPA for the spring semester, raising our cumulative GPA from a 3.42 to a 3.44. This puts us at fourth among all IFC organizations and it also ranks our GPA higher than both the average fraternity member and the average undergraduate student at The Ohio State University. Beta Phi Raises More Than $5,000 for JDRF I'm proud to say our philanthropic efforts were especially successful this year. Led by our philanthropy chairman, Michael Bougie '19, and our external vice president, Nathan Silverman '18, the chapter raised more than $5,000 for JDRF. This was in large part to our inaugural Dad's and Alumni Golf Outing that took place in April and featured Beta Phi Delts of past and present coming together along with our fathers for a fun and memorable weekend. Brothers Earn Perfect Recruitment Retention Rate Our former recruitment chairman, Varun Jambunath '19, was hard at work last spring building the future of our fraternity. He recruited 30 new members. As a testament to Varun and the chapter, the number of bids extended equated the number of bids accepted. Our current recruitment chairman, Colin Lippincott '18, also did a superb job this fall recruiting a class of 12 exceptional young men who we all felt embodied the values of a Delt. Bettering the Community Last spring, we paired with Alpha Phi and Alpha Gamma Rho during Greek Week, giving us an exceptional opportunity to partake in social cookouts and other fun events to bring the Greek community closer together. David Aslaner '19 has been active in organizing volunteer opportunities for the chapter, Beta Phi Brothers Thrive on Campus MeMbers reMain DeterMineD to UpholD traDition of sUccess Danny Rodgers '19, Nick Klepper '19, Kiel Pitzer '19, Patrick Martin '19, Patrick Pirrmann '18, Chris Waidelich '19, and Brett Whitford '18 celebrate a Buckeye victory over TTUN. including volunteering at local soup kitchens and the Adopt-a-School program where Delts help underprivileged youth develop core reading and math skills. In October, we had the honor of attending a guest lecture in the Ohio Union hosted by former DEA agents Steve Murphy and Javier Pena, who are best known for taking down Pablo Escobar and the Medellin cartel. Max Harendza '19 has also been instrumental in bringing in guest speakers to our chapter meetings, touching upon a variety of crucial topics including sexual assault awareness and prevention, mental health, and drug and alcohol abuse. Finally, Will Widman '19, Nathan Silverman '18, Ross George '18, Cornell Blake '19, Pat Gramza '18, Turner Adornetto '18, and I attended the Northern Division conference and accepted awards for excellence in ritual and academics. Beta Phis Tackle Extracurricular Activities This past year we saw a lot of our members take on huge leadership roles and innovative opportunities outside of the fraternity. Nathan Silverman '18 founded and is the president of a consulting club, Tamid, which specializes in establishing connections with Israeli startup companies. Several Delts, including Will Widman '19, Eric Schwartz '18, and Phil Silverman '19, hold executive positions in the organization. Kevin Keenan '19 is part of a group of Ohio State students promoting a new app called Allo, a messaging service provided by Google. Over the summer, Michael Berthold '18 and his band, Clubhouse, played at the Firefly Music Festival, one of the largest music festivals in the world. Along with these impressive extracurricular involvements, our brothers continue to land incredible internships and full-time opportunities with industry leaders like Lockheed Martin, JP Morgan, General Electric, General Motors, the Big 4 accounting firms, RCB Bank, and Tesla. Undergraduates Host Alumni, Parents One of the true highlights of the year was our Alumni Rededication event that took place at our newly renovated Shelter. This event was a wonderful showcase of the hard work our alumni put in and the generous donations they made to our chapter, as the event was well attended by undergraduates, alumni, Ohio State faculty, and friends and family alike. The chapter also enjoyed the Parent's Weekend festivities that took place in late September, as we hosted a brunch at the Shelter with Alpha Phi's members and parents. The members of Beta Phi owe much of their fortune and success to our parents and alumni who care so deeply about us. Thank You, Loyal Alumni As a chapter, we have a host of accomplishments to be proud of. However, we recognize the constant need for improvement. We ask ourselves, can we do better? In the next year, we hope to continue to improve our GPA, find a larger role on organizations like IFC, and bring in quality men to shape our fraternity in the coming years. I'd like to once again thank all alumni for their tireless efforts and support and ask you to not hesitate to drop by the Shelter the next time you find yourself in the area.
