F A L L 2 0 17 P U B L I S H E R ' S L E T T E R Publisher's Letter Treasures Amidst Tragedy My family and I live in Glen Ellen, Calif., a part of what is considered wine country in the north- ern part of the state, and where wildfi res recently devastated entire communities. The experience has been an unimaginably bad dream: beautiful valley landscapes of hills and vineyards have burned to the ground, and the emotional toll taken on friends and neighbors has been over- whelming. While my own home still stands—thanks to fi refi ghters and neighbors teaming up to establish fi re-safe lines around properties—many in my community were not so fortunate and have lost nearly everything. Natural disasters such as this instantly remind you of what is important; the safety of family and pets come fi rst and foremost when you have just moments to evacuate. And of all the inspira- tional stories I've heard from those affected, many—understandably—relay the unbelievable bravery and sacrifi ce of the fi refi ghters and fi rst responders who came from far and wide to help. There are also tales, however, that relate to the material goods grabbed by families before fl eeing homes in harm's way. Not surprisingly, photos and jewelry heirlooms were among those precious items—the objects we'd miss most if lost since they represent vibrant lives full of love and cher- ished memories. Imagine the feelings of sifting through the literal ashes of your former home and fi nding an engraved wedding band still intact! (True story.) For sure, our mementos remind us of moments past that we would like to repeatedly relive. The fi ne jewels you'll sell this holiday season will join this beautiful cycle of helping loved ones keep treasured times close. Before these fi res, I had made notes to write about authenticity—about how we need to be open and genuine with our customers. Being authentic means exhibiting qualities that people are attracted to, like honesty, compassion, and generosity, among others. Being in the moment is another important life lesson, especially since our industry is one that shares in our customers' life events like no other! Our involvement, caring, and know-how is what the customer wants, and as jewelers, nothing could be easier for us to provide. With the holiday season upon us, never forget the simplicity of what jewelry is about, and how the purchase of a gift held dear to a recipient's heart can impact special moments that live forever in memory. Our beautiful product represents so much more for our customers than we realize, so this year, pause to be grateful and authentic, and keep helping your customers make those memories that matter most. All of us at the Jewelry Book wish you a happy holiday season. 14 www.thejewelrybook.com Gem Platinum NICOLE BROMSTAD
