THE TAXI NEWS ALPHA SIGMA CHAPTER OF THETA XI • BRADLEY UNIVERSITY FALL 2017 ALUMNI CONTRIBUTIONS SUPPORT ALPHA SIGMA You Can Help Secure Theta Xi's Future at Bradley I 'd like to take a few minutes of your time to talk about the state of our chapter house. When I first joined Theta Xi in the spring of 2012, our house was in bad shape and we didn't have the resources to do much about it. We had to tear down the Club Xi suspended ceiling with a hammer and wire cutters just to pass fire inspections. We unclogged sinks, urinals, toilets, and the awful grease trap all by hand, knowing it would need to be done again and again. We repaired windows, doors, and walls with the materials we had as best we could. The improvements made since my first years have been vast and lifesaving for the chapter. It would not have been possible without the help of our fantastic alumni and their involvement via the alumni board. With the help of the board, we were able to go from financial chaos to a place of stability and peace of mind at the active chapter level. Whether donations have been monetary or of another variety, I want it to be known none have been forgotten or taken for granted. With our alumni base involved and aligned with the chapter's needs, we have accomplished a great deal for our beloved house. Our shared vision will only benefit the future of the Alpha Sigma Chapter. Since 2012, we have made at least $34,000 worth of capital improvements, with a majority coming after 2015. These improvements include: • New water heater ($6,500) • New electric stove and windows, furnace flue replacement, repairs, and upkeep ($6,000) • New back foyer doors ($3,200) • Fire safety improvements, two new AC units ($8,400), and many others Our mortgage was paid off in 2013, allowing us to save more for many of these high-cost items. However, these savings were offset by the addition of the state-mandated fire sprinkler system costing $43,160 and financed through Bradley over 15 years (payments began late 2012). Just this fall, we've committed another $15,000 out of our capital improvement budget to the replacement of the leaking, rotting, and rusting front doors, frames, and windows. The bulk of the financial impact of these repairs have come at the expense of the active members with their dues funding the majority of these projects. Our next fundraising campaign will be focused on replenishing our capital improvement savings so we can continue these necessary and timely upgrades. In the next few years, we expect to incur more costly repairs from our two older AC units, both furnaces, and our roof (all nearing or past their expected life). At the chapter level, we have some momentum with in-house membership up, many with most of their Bradley years ahead of them. This is an ideal opportunity to solidify our presence on campus and make a statement about our future. I ask you, my fellow brothers, to donate to this cause to care for our one and only chapter house.
