"North Dallas Forty" (1979) A superb Nolte stars in this adaptation of Peter Gent's novel about a pro football star conflicted over front- office politics behind the game ... and what those can prompt players to agree to do, for better or worse. "48 Hrs." (1982) While it made Eddie Murphy an immediate movie star, this action- fueled comedy-drama also features solid work by Nolte as a weary police detective who springs a wisecracking convict (Murphy) to help him find two dangerous fugitives. "Under Fire" (1983) Nolte is excellent as a war photographer caught up in the unrest of late-1970s Nicaragua, and also in a love triangle with two other journalists. "Down and Out in Beverly Hills" (1986) Nolte is effortlessly hilarious as a street person who invades the lives of a nouveau-riche couple (Bette Midler, Richard Dreyfuss) in this update of the French classic "Boudu Saved From Drowning." "Lorenzo's Oil" (1992) A gripping Nolte performance fuels this fact-inspired drama about a father determined to find a cure for his son, who suffers from a rare disease. "Affliction" (1997) Nolte rightfully was Oscar-nominated for director Paul Schrader's drama about a lawman trying to come to terms with his father (James Coburn) while investigating a friend's involvement in a death.
