Tracey Ull- man retreads. Her newest cre- ation, "Tracey Ullman's Show," is the modern take on her classic sketch-comedy style. The show returns for its second season Friday, Oct. 27, on HBO. Most audiences know Ull- man from her series on Fox, which won her an armful of Emmys and Golden Globes and introduced "The Simp- sons" to audiences world- wide. By the time "The Tracey Ullman Show" ended in 1990, Fox had won 10 Emmys. It was the first nomination and win for the network, giving Fox a taste of legitimacy. BBC may have changed its title in 2015 to "Tracey Ull- man's Show" to distinguish it from the former Fox series, but fans will find a familiar absurdity in the new show. Ullman brings the same quirky originality of her prior work, describing the new se- ries as a U.K. version of Show- time's "Tracey Ullman's State of the Union." American cabler HBO first contacted Ullman about a special for the network. "Trac- ey Ullman Takes On New York" went on to receive a wave of awards, including six Emmys, three American Com- edy Awards and a Screen Ac- tors Guild Award. Part of Ullman's comedy in- volves a mastery of disguise. She often plays multiple char- acters in each scene, and this season it will be no different. "It will be eclectic, as always," she said in a Metro interview. "I wish I could find a way to play one character, but that's not me." A character favorite, Dame Judi Dench, returns in the first episode. Ullman plays Dench as a delinquent and klepto- maniac finding herself behind bars where no one knows she's a "national treasure." "There are a few national treasures, and they can get away with anything," Ull- man told IndieWire. "Wouldn't it be funny if Judi goes around scratching cars and shoplifting?" In another sketch, Ullman portrays Nicola Sturgeon, the first minister of Scotland, kid- napping J. K. Rowling, the be- loved author of the Harry Pot- ter books. Other impersonations in- clude Camilla Parker-Bowles and German Chancellor An- gela Merkel, the latter being Ullman's most prized impersonation. "I always wanted to imper- sonate [Merkel]," Ullman said. "She's one of the best ones because I don't think anyone really knows what she's like. She's a mystery woman." The show has a non- canned laugh track, so you know the audience is giving an honest answer to what is funny and what's not. BBC screens its episodes at the BBC Radio Theatre every year, recording the reactions of the live audience and adding them to the soundtrack. Ullman's show includes three writers from "Veep," the HBO comedy created by Brit- ish filmmaker Armando Ian- nucci. British fans will also recognize actors Lucy Mont- gomery ("The Armstrong and Miller Show"), Jason Forbes ("Horrible Science"), Tony Gardner ("Tracy Breaks the News"), Elizabeth Berrington ("Camping") and Joan Linder ("Little Britain"). Ullman returned to British television in 2016 after work- ing in the U.S. for 30 years. In 2006, she became a dual citi- zen so she could get the right to vote in presidential elec- tions, but she kept her British passport and remained an ac- tive member of the Labour party. Her husband, producer Al- lan McKeown, died in 2013 from prostate cancer three days before the couple's 30th wedding anniversary. Ullman returned to the U.K. after his passing. Two years after her husband's death, her mother died in an accidental fire. When Charlotte Moore of BBC1 approached Ullman to do a new show, Ullman agreed because she thought McKeown "would have want- ed her to do it." The project has been her first with BBC in 30 years, since "Three of a Kind" and "Kick up the Eighties," and was also the initial project Ull- man produced after her hus- band's and mother's passing. She poured her grief into her work, making a series that is both light and dark, heartfelt and, more importantly, funny. As for BBC, Ullman is happy to return to the network. One thing that's surprised her is the number of women in se- nior roles. The last time she worked with BBC, it was male dominated. "As a woman on British TV at that time, you could be a Benny Hill girl, and that was about it," she explained to The Guardian. "Now there are a lot more women. Great ones. The important things haven't changed, though. The BBC still provides an environ- ment that allows you the free- dom to create the best shows possible." She even launched another show this past June on BBC1: "Tracey Breaks the News," a one-off British comedy televi- sion special. The sketch show addresses current issues, and filming occurs up to the day of broadcast. Season 2 of "Tracey Ull- man's Show" premiered last week on HBO. Catch a new episode Friday, Oct. 27, on the cabler. Tracey Ullman's humor holds strong on both sides of the Atlantic Featurestory
