Fall 2017 SWORD AND SHIELD u m d p h i d e l t . c o m Brother Updates Christopher James Bopst #1941 I have been working in the mortgage industry the past six years. I began working in the industry a week after graduation in 2011 and haven't looked back. Being a member taught me how important relationships can be in life and business; so, I always looked to other brothers to share this opportunity with them. Between myself and a few others, we have successfully employed over 30 brothers in the mortgage industry. I take great pride in what I do, and I am always looking to help other members in any way that I can. Phi Delta Theta and my career have changed my life, and I hope I can continue to pass that on over the years to come. If you or anyone you know is in need of purchasing a new home or refinancing their current home, or maybe just has some questions, I would be happy to speak with you. If anyone is looking for a career change as well I would be happy to assist. Or if you would just like to get back in touch, I am here as well. wfhm.com/loans/christo- pher-bopst/ John Charles Ford #778 Moved to New York City right out of grad school in the mid-60's and have lived there ever since. Along the way, I married WMUC's "Miss Midnight," Sandra Sollod, about 30 years after we first met. I have had three careers: 10 years on Wall Street (Merrill Lynch and American Stock Exchange); 10 years in broadcasting/cable (CBS, ABC, and more recently HBO as VP of HR); and for the last 20 years an interesting and varied consulting career working in leadership development with primarily financial firms and entertainment companies. Just returned from the July Kleiberg Emerging Leaders program in Oxford, Ohio—1,100 Phis in attendance, including Maryland Alpha pres- ident, Anthony Busani #2160 and TJ Coughlin #2185, Honors Col- lege Whole Man Scholars. I was invited as a Fellow and participated in all activities and mentored a group of 20 brothers from across the global spectrum. This was my first visit to GHQ after 55 years as a Phi, and it is great to know what splendid shape our fraternity is in. A highlight was a group of Fellows reading the Bond aloud in the "room where it happened" in 1848—the room in Old North (now Elliott) Hall occupied by Brother Robert Morrison and where the original Bond was composed and ascribed by its six founders. We have a noble heritage indeed. At 75, I am still working as a consultant full-time along with husbanding and grandfathering in the heart of New York City. I still do the occasional voiceover for kicks. We have a second home in Western Massachusetts to which we escape on weekends— often with our two grandkids. I sing in a choir, lector for my local parish, serve on four college or university boards, and currently chair the Board of Visitors for UMD's Theater, Dance, and Performance Studies program in College Park, where we've set up a professorship and scholarship program for the future. My work has taken me to every continent but Antarctica... and that's still on the list. Life goes fast at 75—seems like breakfast is every fifteen minutes! Nicholas J. Schaus #818 Just attended my U of M 50th graduation reunion/celebration. The uni- versity gets a high grade for the event, but I had some disappointment with the poor turnout—80 out of 3,000. I highly recommend attending when your 50th occurs and using this new site to encourage other Phis. I am still celebrating my retirement—16 years—at Friday happy hours at Fleet Reserve Club Annapolis. I just renewed U of M basketball tickets for next season. Go Terps! Delano Jackson Schmidt #1776 We welcomed our third child, Emmett Fitzgerald Schmidt, on April 15, 2017, joining sisters Rory (5) and Piper (2). I live in Towson, Md., with my wife Meghan (UMD Alpha Phi '04). I have been in the residential real estate business for the last 11 years and run my fourth generation family company, Chase Fitzgerald. Michael Sikorski #2034 After graduating in 2015, I spent a year in Madrid, Spain, on a Fulbright scholarship working on a pretty neat medical research project and trav- eling all over. I am in my second year of an M.D./Ph.D. program at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in Baltimore. I am living in a great row home in Fed Hill— only a short walk to the Orioles and Ravens stadiums—and I would welcome a visit from any Phis visiting Baltimore. John D. Twining #724 I retired in 2004 after almost 30 years as an administrator in college ath- letics. I live in Southlake, Texas, with his my wife, Lynn. We celebrated 50 years of marriage in 2016. We enjoy spending our summers in Frisco, Colo. To share your noteworthy updates and accomplishments with brothers, please visit the Brother to Brother page on umdphidelt.com.
