BACK BAY BETA Beta Upsilon Chapter of Beta Theta Pi at The Massachusetts Institute of Technology FALL 2017 I hope you'll enjoy our new format for the Back Bay Beta. We've revamped our alumni communications to bring you more alumni news and to facilitate keeping in touch with your Beta brothers. Changes in Alumni Communications Behind all these changes is a switch in our alumni communications partner. Aer decades of working with Stewart Howe (acquired several times and most recently part of Elevate), we have switched to Pennington & Company (www.penningtonco.com). We worked with Pennington on our successful Centennial Campaign to raise money to renovate our facilities. at gave us the confidence to switch to Pennington for our alumni communications program and to take advantage of the new ideas and perspective they bring. You'll also notice that our mailing address for contributions and news submissions has moved to Lawrence, Kan., where Pennington is headquartered. And, of course, I am always available by email if you have any questions. Spotlighting Beta Upsilon Alumni e first change is the new format of the Back Bay Beta. While continuing to keep you updated on what is happening in the Chapter, we will be putting more of an emphasis on alumni news, including an alumni spotlight each issue. Make sure to check out our inaugural spotlight on Paul Rothman '80 on page 2. I still have "fond memories" of Paul reminding me that I was a pledge back in 1979. Please submit your news to us to include in these newsletters, as well as suggestions for alumni you'd like to see spotlighted in future issues. Visit Our New Website, www.beta-mit.org Also, we have revamped our alumni website at www.beta-mit.org. On the site, you'll find more photos than ever before and updated news. Please also feel free to send me photos for inclusion on the site as we'd like to add both historical photos as well as more recent photos of alumni gatherings. We plan to continue to add more capabilities to our site and would welcome volunteers who are interested in helping plan those updates. On the website, you can also find a page of lost Brothers who we do not have good contact information for. Please help us by supplying some contact information for them if you happen to have it. You'll help us all stay connected. Opt-In to Stay in Touch In addition, we will soon be relaunching some alumni email aliases that will allow us to communicate with each other. ese opt-in email lists will let us share information informally, either just announcements or, if you prefer, more unfiltered communications. Some of you will remember these from the betaupsilon.org domain. I've been working with Christian Hamer '94 to restart these lists. We will create two email aliases, both on an Welcome to the New Back Bay Beta! Alumni during the annual Tech reunion where we congratulated our newest Red Coats on their 50th reunion. ose in attendance were: Eric De Jong '67, Lampros Fatsis '77, Keith Glick '62, Richard Horttor '62, Stephen Schroeder '67, Alfred Wechsler '55, George Wheeler '67, Mead Wyman '62, and Andrew Yip '02. opt-in basis. e first, alumni@betaupsilon.org, will be used for unfiltered communications between our alumni. You will need to be a member of the group to post, and Christian and I will monitor this. e second, alumni- quiet@betaupsilon.org, will be an opt-in list used only for announcements and other important information. Again, you will need to be a member of the list to post to it. You will soon receive an email giving you the opportunity to opt-in to one or both lists. If you prefer not to receive email from either list, you can ignore the email invitation. If these lists are successful, we will look to implement other forms of communication, including pledge class lists, etc. Please make sure you keep us updated with your contact information so we can stay in touch with you! anks to all of you for your support of Beta Upsilon. Without your financial and volunteer support, we couldn't keep the Beta spirit going and ensure that today's undergraduates get the same opportunity we had to build lifelong friendships. We are always looking for more volunteers, from any geography, starting with opportunities that could just take a few hours a year. Working with today's undergraduates is very satisfying, and you'll reinforce to them the value of the Beta connection. I welcome your feedback and suggestions and look forward to seeing you at our 105th anniversary celebration on April 27-29, 2018, in Boston.
