The co-owner of Sonoma Coast Spirits gained a reputation as the go-to woman for delicious cocktails for the Petaluma Women's Club and Petaluma Sun- rise Rotary, where she'd serve up her Lemon Drop, along with other mixed beverages, to fellow club members at special events. Her friends urged her to start bottling her cocktails, and that is when Olson and her husband, Doug, founded their craft spirits and cocktail business. From their Petaluma distillery, Sonoma Coast Spirits creates Olson's bottled spirits (including her famous Lemon Drop), vodka and grappa. "Balancing home and work is the hardest thing in the world for a working mom to do," says Olson, who has raised four chil- dren and operated an appraisal business with her husband, on top of running the distillery. "I don't know any other way but to juggle work and family and try to keep a good calendar and manage your time as best you can. My most productive time of the day is between 4 a.m. and 7 a.m. when everyone is asleep and the phone doesn't ring." They are both "fully vested" in the distillery and according to Olson, "have the same passion to make it succeed." The biggest challenge they run into is Olson's workaholic tendencies, "I am Type A and he is not," she shares. "I can keep working long hours and talk about the business 24/7 and it drives him totally crazy." It's that energy that keeps the business growing, and Olson also gains inspiraton from the growing number of women in- volved in the craft spirits industry. "Women bring a lot of creativity to the in- dustry that pushes the boundaries of flavors and ideas."
