October 17, 2012 LETTERS FROM PAGE 4 Adopt a family for holidays Carol Kelley says they have 300 families to help at Christmas time. The Quartzsite Visitor's Guide show 51 parks, but I'm sure that amount is higher. Wouldn't it be great if each park de- cided to "adopt" a family or two? Buy everything for a great dinner and may- be a toy for each child. Smaller parks could "adopt" a couple or a single per- son. The larger the park, the larger the family! Maybe even the businesses could get www.DesertMessenger.com in on it! We might be known for some- thing besides fi ghting! Contact Carol at Quartzsite Food Bank 928-927-5003 Tuesday and Thursday mornings. Louise Stevens, Quartzsite Amazing volunteer I would like to share a story with everyone in Quartzsite. I recently at- tended a conference in Phoenix with the Salvation Army Extension Units. This was the fi rst one of this kind they have ever held. One day, as usual, our Salvation Army Advocate Tonya So- renson, came to our location and spent the day. We all said we would like to meet and talk with the other Unit lead- ers. So Tonya Sorenson, our Heart and Soul to Quartzsite, worked many hours to put this together. I met so many people, all with dif- ferent stories of why they do this volunteer thing. Their stories where different, but all had the same basic theme- to help people, to repay help that somewhere along the way, they had received. But one volunteer really had a story, and I will remember and admire her forever. Laverne Williams of Bisbee, Arizona is 90 years old, and the only Salvation Army volunteer Bisbee has ever had. She's been on the job 55 years! She told us how she came to Bisbee when she was 4 years old, and has been there ever since. She worked many years in the bank and was Mayor three times. Had she not told us her age, no one in the room would have guessed her age. She spoke with each and every one of us, invited us to visit her town and come to her home. She offered to show us 'her" Bisbee. It's people like Laverne that make this world go round. I can only hope and pray that the people in this little town can read this and see the love this lady has for people and her town, and some of it rub will off on our folks here. Carol Kelley, Salvation Army a few individuals that know I had chal- lenged the wastewater business Colo- rado River Joint Venture in Parker over charging folks for past due, con- tracted with other person's sewer bills. This challenge applies to water com- panies also. Here's the scoop. Arizona Revised Don't pay another's water bill Recently I have been contacted by Statutes and the House Bill 2193 were Legislative Bill's signed by the Gover- nor. Note: This bill PROHIBITS a city, town or county from refusing service or requiring payment for unpaid wa- ter & wastewater service from anyone other than the person who resides or resided at the property and received the service. So if the City is asking you to pay past water or sewer bills, that are not yours, JUST SAY NO and redirect them to this Arizona State LAW. Good Luck. You may contact me for a copy of this bill if needed. What I wished I'd said... Last Tuesday at the Town Council meeting, the Council did not back down despite the many threats they were faced with. I commend them for this. Section 2 2-1-10 Qualifi cations of Council Candidates Part B states " The qualifi cations for eligibility includes the requirement that no delinquent or fi xed fi nes and penalties, user fees, permit fees, and sales tax be owed to the Town of Quartzsite at the time of declaration of candidacy." This law should never have come into question. Mr. Ed Foster was imposed a judgment in court which instructed Quirky Quartzsite Cake Main Street Eatery Page 5 him to pay the Town of Quartzsite their attorney fees. Mr. Foster chose to thumb his nose at the Judge and at the town and in his arrogance, has refused to pay the judg- ment. He has publically stated " I will never pay the money." Mr. Foster should be in contempt of court. However, his arrogance is what has deprived the people of their vote for him, not the council. Had he been an honorable man, he would have paid the judgment, and would have been seated as Mayor. The fault lies with Mr. Foster, not the law or the town.
