3 CORNELL UNIVERSITY SILENT CHAPTER Barbara Carr Hawkins '52 passed away in 2016 as a resident of Canada. She will be missed by her family, friends, and Alpha Phi sisters. Catherine Collins Majek '78 passed away on April 25, 2016, at the age of 59, after a brave six- year battle with ovarian cancer. Cathy's daugh- ter, Jayme Majek Torelli '04, says, "In her last few months, Cathy became a grandmother and I became a mother for the first time, as we cele- brated the birth of my daughter, Catherine Adele Torelli. Cate has brought all of us a lot of joy." Cathy enjoyed a career as a registered dietician that spanned three decades in local healthcare facilities, including Elmer Community Hospital, Mater Dei Nursing Home, Friends Home, Rain- bow Center, and Genesis Elder Care in Millville, from which she retired in 2013. ALUMNAE NEWS Virginia MacArthur Clagett '44 reports that at 94 years old, there are few classmates to keep in touch with. She says, "It is incredible what has happened at Cornell, from early, simple instruc- tion to all these newfangled approaches. The di- versity and population of the university is incred- ible!" Virginia is no longer able to teach English and French or volunteer. She has a son, Henry, who has served as a police officer for 30 years and is retiring from the force in Highland as cap- tain. Virginia also has three grandsons: Andrew, who is a Lehigh University graduate and works for Ingersoll Rand in Seattle, Wash.; Thomas, who is a junior at Lafayette College; and Steven, who is a sophomore at Red Bank Catholic High School. "The world has changed, not always for the better; but one must adapt and try hard to do everything properly," she says. Virginia lives in Atlantic Highlands, N.J. Julia Kirkland Leidy '45 lived in Rose near New Jersey from 1990 to 2003, until she moved to Medford Leas, N.J., with her partner, Bob, who died a year ago. She keeps in touch with Louise Borntrager Weigel '45 quite of- ten and attended the 2015 reunion with Jean Hall Dinsmore '45. "Still driving and love it, but need a motorized scooter for long walking and a walker for shopping!" Julia says. E-mail: judyleidy@gmail.com Lillian Gorton Spiece '47 says she has had an interesting life as a welfare worker and teacher. She married an army officer, Donald, and had two children. She moved 13 times in 15 years, including spending two years in Alaska and Tu- nisia in 1962. E-mail: lgspiece@gmail.com Jacqueline Grimm Kingston '61 says, "I have finally given up my copyediting and proofread- ing work and am filling some of the time with duplicate bridge and volunteering at the town library. My husband, William, and I are both healthy, thankfully, and continue to enjoy travel- ing." The couple lives in Wilton, Conn. E-mail: jgkingston@aol.com Marcia Case Field '61 still loves retirement and being able to do the art work she loves: stained glass, quilting, and woodcarving. "I just re- ceived a first-place award in a juried show for sculpture," she says. Marcia and her husband, A. Kirk, have two children, Karen Field '86 and Richard, who are both Cornell graduates. Jacqueline Rhoades Scarsella '66 spent time with three other Phis, Judith Lovell Wagner '66, Dorothy Luebke Trusz '66, and Susan Brenner '66, after 52 years.
