As the pals in question, Robert De Niro, John Savage and Christopher Walken head an impressive cast that also includes Meryl Streep, George Dzundza ("Law & Order") and John Cazale, who died as filming was wrapping. And those Russian roulette scenes ... "Apocalypse Now" (1979) Though Francis Ford Coppola's epic about an Army captain's (Martin Sheen) quest to assassinate a renegade colonel (Marlon Brando) is considered by many to be among the greatest films ever, it also had more than its share of problems. On set, Brando showed up overweight and unprepared, Sheen suffered a near-fatal heart attack and heavy weather destroyed sets. Off it, Coppola incurred costly delays as he edited the thousands hours of footage. Still, the final product speaks for itself. "Platoon" (1986) Long before he was fired from "Two and a Half Men," a youthful Charlie Sheen became a star with his performance as a young recruit facing a moral crisis while in battle in Oliver Stone's Oscar-winning drama. Stone penned the script shortly after returning from his tour as an Army infantryman in Vietnam, partly as a counterpoint to what he felt was the false depiction of war portrayed in John Wayne's "The Green Berets." For their work, co-stars Tom Berenger and Willem Dafoe also received supporting actor nods. "Full Metal Jacket" (1987) Stanley Kubrick put his unmistakable thumbprint on this film that follows a platoon's experiences from boot camp through the Tet Offensive of 1968, focusing on one young Marine (Matthew Modine) who manages to survive it all and become a combat journalist. Vietnam veteran R. Lee Ermey positively shines as a drill instructor whose stern disciplinary measures vex the group and become too much for one bumbling recruit (Vincent D'Onofrio).
