2 Preparing Young Women for Success in the Sciences and Engineering H eadlines continue to ask whether we are doing enough as a nation to prepare women in the area of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics). How well is Bishop Seabury doing to prepare young women to pursue degrees in science and engineering? To answer this question, we analyzed data over a five-year period from 2012-2016 by gender in three categories: • The number of college science/engineering majors • Total enrollment in BSA science electives • ACT science scores and college readiness benchmark We are pleased to report that by all three measures, our female students meet or exceed our male students. In fact, it is worth noting that there is a positive trend showing improvement for all students in the sciences from 2012-2016, which correlates with our efforts during that time to align the science curriculum, increase time in field and lab activities, add science elective courses, increase the science graduation requirement, and increase funding and grants for science. Our hard work is paying off! 2015 2016 Overall: 2012-2016 Graduation Year Total Students Males in Science Courses Females in Science Courses 20 28 124 5 (25%) 1 (5%) 7 (25%) 7 (25%) 58 (12%) 66 (11%) How does STEM involvement directly correlate to ACT scores? Bishop Seabury is ahead overall, in students involved in STEM courses, but also statewide on their ACT scores. These scores were empirically derived based on the actual performance of students in college. *State scores have fallen over the last five years while the Seabury average has risen to its highest average.
