Anthony Griffin '20 - Hanover, Germany Griffin Overbeck '20 - Chicago, Ill. Connor Raatz '19 - Lincoln, Neb. Tyler Rademacher '20 - Fort Collins, Colo. Tom Volkmer '20 - Brunswick, Germany Jackson Walker '19 - Overland Park, Kan. This class certainly mirrors the ideal of Sigma Chi having men of different temperaments, talents, and convictions. Freshman Tom Volkmer is a German student. He talked about his experience as a foreign student and what the Chapter has brought to him. "My pledge brothers were not only very interested in my background, but also gave me insight into theirs and helped me understand much more about America itself," Tom said. "They were a strong and reassuring presence for me as I adjusted to life on campus." Other new members reflect on their time in the Alpha Epsilon Chapter. Sophomore David Cluchey became certain during the winter rush process that Sigma Chi would be the best fit for him. "Sigma Chi has been the best choice I've made," David said. "Freshman year I made a couple of friends, but after we left the dorms it became hard to keep in touch. With Sigma Chi, I have more than 80 new friends that I will never lose touch with." Freshman Tyler Rademacher also cherishes every moment he gets in the Sigma Chi house and created passions along the way. "My time in Sigma Chi has truly been a blessing in every sense of the word. Not only have I formed connections with men I am proud to call my brothers, I have deepened my own sense of personal responsibility and found a passion for serving others." We at Alpha Epsilon are incredibly proud of each new Sigma Chi we've initiated this past year. We look forward to continuing the growth and prosperity of our Chapter. T he Alpha Epsilon Chapter has always prided itself on its commitment to community service. The cornerstone of our commitment is, of course, Derby Days. Last spring, we raised an impressive $8,000 through this great event. Women from 14 teams enthusiastically participated in eight events, including a dance competition, relay race, and a home run derby. At the end of the day, the sophomore team from Gamma Phi Beta came out with the overall win. Alpha Epsilon's 2016-17 Derby Days chairman, Zach Kohut '19, worked with his committee all year to ensure that Derby Days 2017 was a huge success. "It was very exciting to be a part of one of Sigma Chi's biggest and most visible events," Zach said. "I'm very proud of my committee for all the hard work they put in this year to make it the best Derby Days we've had in years." The 2017-18 Derby Days chairman is Billy Seeger '19, who is determined to make this year's Derby Days the best ever. Work has already begun and we're pumped up about the prospect of getting even more participation. Beyond Derby Days, on November 4, 2016, we successfully put on our second Chicken and Waffles philanthropy with able assistance from Phi Mu and raised more than $2,600 in ticket sales, donations, and the selling of raffle tickets. Zach Lewis '18, the philanthropy chairman last fall, said, "All the members had a great time working the Chicken and Waffles event, and with a growing Chapter, I'm excited to see all the opportunities that will come our way for philanthropic events and other fundraising events." The active members of Alpha Epsilon hope to continue the trend of effectively raising money for Huntsman Cancer Foundation, an organization founded in tribute to fellow Sig, John Huntsman, Pennsylvania '59, which is doing great work. A side benefit of our support of the Huntsman Cancer Foundation is that our contribution underpins our consideration for the prestigious Peterson Award, which we have now won two times in a row at the blue level. We're going for the gold in 2017.
