Spring 2014 Fall 2017 INSIDE: Chapter Advisor Team Report (2) • Record Rush (4) • Success at Balfour (6) THE HUSKER SIG Alpha Epsilon Chapter of Sigma Chi at the University of Nebraska T he Greater Nebraska Area Alumni Chapter has seen an increase in dues paid in 2017. Thanks to all of the brothers that have contributed. We are pleased at the positive and encouraging news coming out of the undergraduate Chapter. They are our focus and the object of our efforts to keep Sigma Chi in a strong leadership position on campus. We are pleased with the reports and accolades coming out of the UNL Student Affairs Department about the "exemplary" involvement and leadership of our members. Along those lines, we have doubled down on our efforts to underpin our values by establishing a new award for excellence and service and continuing to support two other undergraduate awards involving scholarship. • Mick Dragoo Alpha Epsilon Generosity Award - Named after the most generous alumnus donor to our recent capital campaign. This newly established award will be presented annually to an undergraduate recognized for his generous spirit in giving his time and energy to philanthropic causes. Recognition does not have cash value, but high ceremonial value. The undergraduate is given Mick Dragoo's Sigma Chi pin for a year and a plaque memorializing his achievement. Mick was an AE Sig class of 1965 and the award is made possible by the donation of his widow, Mary Dragoo. The first recipient of this award is Mark Anderson '19 from Peoria, Illinois, for the school year ending in April of 2018. • Meier Award - Scholarship value of $500 awarded to an undergraduate based on financial need and quality of essay required for application. Beyond the scholarship stipend, the recipient's name is recorded on a commemorative plaque housed at 1510 Vine in the John Wayne room. The recipient for this award for the school year ending in April of 2018 is Kasey Smith '19 from Omaha, Nebraska. • Landis Award - Scholarship value of $500 awarded to a pledge undergraduate with the highest first semester GPA. Beyond the scholarship stipend, the recipient's name is recorded on a commemorative plaque housed in the John Wayne room. The recipient for the Landis award is Andrew Arend '20 for the fall semester of 2016. Andrew achieved a 3.863 GPA in his first semester at UNL. ALUMNI EVENTS Our alumni chapter continues to support the students at 1510 Vine Street. We have tentatively scheduled our annual fall luncheon with undergraduates on September 8. This special event will be held at Brewsky's in the Haymarket and will begin at noon. Please come to support the undergraduate Chapter and get to know some of the fine young men authoring a fine new chapter in the life of Alpha Epsilon. Invites will be sent out and you need to RSVP to info@unlsigmachi.org. As mentioned on page 4, the Greater Nebraska Area Alumni Chapter will co-host a tailgate party at the Chapter House on September 23, prior to the Homecoming game against Rutgers. Please stop by to see old friends and meet new undergraduate brothers! The reception will begin two hours prior to start of the football game if kickoff is 2 p.m. or later. Finally, we will hold our annual holiday party in December. Watch for a save-the-date announcement for time and place. MEMBERSHIP AND INVOLVEMENT We're a relatively small band of regular participants in events and meetings involving the Greater Nebraska Area Alumni Chapter. Won't you consider getting involved? We do really good stuff for the undergraduates, and I think you'd find it gratifying to get involved. We can always utilize your special skills and your personal interests in helping us guide and mentor our undergraduate brothers. Safe to say, each of us has stood on the shoulders of giants in our undergraduate years and in our careers. It's time for you to pay it forward as well. Call me at (402) 434-3115 or e-mail me at cdenker@pinnbank. com. I'll help you get meaningfully involved. In hoc, Curt Denker '73 President, Greater Nebraska Area Alumni Chapter ALUMNI CHAPTER EMPHASIZES EXCELLENCE The members of Alpha Epsilon after initiating the spring '17 class.
