Adams of course wants to get there, but doesn't want the emphasis on him. He wants the Cardinals focused every kickoff. A seven-win season not only gets Adams to the 200-win milestone, but also likely translates into a play- off appearance, something Farmington hasn't achieved since bouncing up to the 5A West after the 2013-2014 school year. As underdogs picked by Hootens to finish sixth in the league, Farmington has nothing to lose and everything to gain. OFFENSE Quarterback Senior Trey Waggle (6-4, 195) is a returning starter, who completed 100 of 197 passing attempts for 1,250 yards and 12 touchdowns with 9 interceptions in 2016. "He's very good athletically," Adams said. "A work in progress. He's been more careful with the football. Make the play when it's there. Don't force it when it's not." Juniors Eric Hill (5-10, 165) and Seth Swain (6-0, 165) add depth at quarter- back. Runningback Seniors Caleb Williams (5-8, 190), Javan Jowers (5-10, 175), and Jared Oskey (5-8, 170); along with juniors Reid Turner (5-9, 175), and Dimariae Donovan (5-5, 140) all are working at the position. "All of these guys have good weight, they're all strong enough to handle the job," Adams said. Oskey also plays fullback along with senior Jaden Goff (5-10, 190), who had a good fall camp; and junior Rhett Rominger (6-0, 205), a good runner and strong blocker. Receivers Senior Xavier Staten (6-3, 185) was in catch-up mode in early August after missing some workouts. "He had a good spring in track, we feel he's improved his speed," Adams said. "He's a match-up problem. He's 6-feet- 3, you don't have a lot of cornerbacks out there who play, who are going to be that big." Sophomore Drew Sturgeon moved up to varsity for the final game of the season as a freshman and contributed. "He had six catches in that game, that shows he's ready to compete," Adams said. "He has good hands, good open- field ability. He can make people miss." Possession receiver junior Kolton Reeves (5-5, 130) may be small, but knows every route and Adams said probably had a better spring practice than any other Cardinal. Tight End Senior Jacob Gray (6-2, 190) doesn't look very fast, but somehow manages to get behind people a lot. "Gray catches the ball super and has become a very, good blocker," Adams said. Senior Jae Woods (6-2, 195) and soph- omore Ben Macedo (6-3, 220) stack the position. Offensive line Returning starter at right guard senior Zach Newman (6-3, 290) is the Cardinals' most physical lineman and already has college offers. "For a guy his size, he has pretty good feet," Adams said. "He blows people up." Senior Sam Stevens (6-3, 300) returns at left guard. Adams is pleased with his enhanced physicality on the field. Senior Cody Parrish (6-1, 190) started at center last year and is battling junior Chuck Carlson (6-1, 330) for the starting position this season. Parrish scored a 35 on his ACT and attended Boys State as a Farm- ington delegate. Junior Jarek Braslavsky (5-11, 215) has put on 10 pounds at right tackle. He was forced into action last season. Adams said he wasn't really ready then, but is the Cardinals' most improved lineman from last season. Undersized junior Austin Shepherd (6-1, 185) lines up at left tackle. Adams said, "he plays about half mean, so that goes a long way." Sophomore Hayden Grantham (5-10, 250) provides depth. DEFENSE Defensive line Williams bench-presses 300 pounds and starts at defensive end. Adams said Williams' combination of strength and FARMINGTON VARSITY FOOTBALL PREVIEW PHOTO COURTESY OF LIFETOUCH NATIONAL STUDIOS The 2017 Farmington varsity football team aims to become the first in school history to secure a 5A State playoff berth and help head coach Mike Adams (193-132-2) achieve 200 wins.
