David was our third or fourth best runner last year, but at the very last meet of the year he ran a 17:25 which was the fastest on the team all year." Other team members include junior Bryce Berryhill and sophomores Jackson Behm, Garrett Spears, Tyler Moritz and Isaiah Garvin. "That is a solid group of sophomore boys," Crockett said. "Alex is a great leader for the sophomores. I tell them just do what Alex does and you will be successful." Crockett said improving on last year's seventh place at districts will be tough because the top six at districts were also among the top teams in the state. "Our conference is also super tough," Crockett said. "Lamar is a defending state champion and East Newton is always good. I would like to beat some of the other teams that beat us last year like Cassville." McDonald County opened with a two-mile tune-up race on Aug. 22 at Missouri Southern State University. The Mustangs then have a break before the season opens for real on Sept. 9 at Ray-Pec High School.
