14 www.DesertMessenger.com August 9, 2017 The Salvation Army happenings What a busy month and one of the hottest on record! Don't need to tell us locals! We have been and will continue to be a community cool- ing center. Cold water is given out daily. Our air-conditioned building is a cool place to be. We will be open all of August. We are open Monday, Tuesda, and Wednesday from 8am - noon. New volunteers are always welcome-you can make your own schedule. A fun place to volunteer. It is with great sadness to report the passing of longtime volunteer, Vaughn (Von) Myers. Mr. "I can fix anything" went to heaven on July 23, 2017. Remembrance will be an- nounced later by the family. Please come into the store and sign com- munity card for the family. On July 22, several TSA volun- teers and community members par- ticipated in a Thrivent Water Col- lection Project at Dollar General. Always a happy jokester, our Von was "muscles" that evening. Over 200 cases of water were purchased and collected in this Thrivent Proj- ect. These community agencies and cooling centers: Quartzsite Police & Fire Departments, Quartzsite Food Bank, Town of Quartzsite, First As- sembly of God Church, AMR, Isaiah 58, and the Salvation Army were all recipients. Two collection shopping carts will continue to accept commu- nity donations at Dollar General and the General Store. We thank Family Dollar and Road Runner for allowing our collection carts last month, too. Thank you to those who bought and put water into store baskets for our community. You are all awesome! Our next Thrivent Project will be to purchase and collect new socks for school aged children in Quartzsite. Look for flyers and donation col- lection centers soon. Socks will be distributed at Quartzsite Salvation Army Store sometime in September. Donations are most welcome during business hours or when our Dona- tion Cart is out in front of the store. Remembering that donations are, "What you would give a friend." Gar- bage goes to the dump. Thanks! Always pray to have eyes that see the best in people, a heart that for- gives the worst, a mind that forget the bad, and a soul that never loses faith in God.
