ring backs ("For the person who
wears jewelry for themselves and
not to show off," says Schaffrath);
and Vendetta, a corundum inlay se-
ries with a proprietary and easy-to-
adjust sizing system.
Not surprisingly, Schaffrath's
accolades have mushroomed. The
company has earned myriad design
awards, but its most important
recognition comes from longtime
retailers. Fans include a consor-
tium of independent jewelers in
Germany who have exclusive rights
to sell the brand's work, and I.
Gorman in Washington, D.C.,
which has carried the line for
12 years.
"The jewelry is different enough to
catch the customer's eye but time-
less enough for clients to see them-
selves wearing it forever," says
Adam Gorman, president.
One caveat: because of its quality,
Schaffrath can't be compared to or
sold like any other line. "We have
never had a stone loosen up or fall
out—the jewelry is perfectly engi-
neered," notes Gorman.
This unprecedented achievement is
refl ected in the company's brand
icon, the unicorn: it does not exist,
just as similar manufacturing and
design techniques do not occur out-
side Schaffrath.
Despite that steely German precision,
Schaffrath maintains a sense of humor.
"The most common joke about our
brand is that we still don't know how
to set a diamond," Schaffrath says.
"We have never had a stone loosen up or fall
out—the jewelry is perfectly engineered,"
–
notes Gorman.
