Dear students and parents: On behalf of Wayne County Public Schools, the Wayne County Board of Education and all of our employees, I would like to welcome you to our school district and the 2017-2018 school year. I am excited, proud and honored to be the superintendent of Wayne County Public Schools. In the coming weeks, we antici- pate more than 18,000 new and returning students to enter our 32 schools and School Street Early Learning Center. Our teachers and administrators look forward to the first day of school when our students arrive to class with that special mix of excitement and anxiousness as they catch up with their peers, make new friends and begin a new year of learning. Each year, our schools work to make improvements from the pre- vious year. This past year,Wayne County Public Schools began implementing innovative and transformational strategies developed as part of a five-year strategic plan. As we move into the second year of the district's strategic plan, we will continue working to build on current successes while also addressing any areas of concern in order to increase academic success and cultivate a rich learning envi- ronment for our students. As superintendent, it is my per- sonal goal to see our school district become a leader in the state of North Carolina. We believe that our children are a valuable resource and our schools are working to make a difference in the lives of every student who is enrolled. We welcome the support of our parents, in building a collabora- tive partnership with them, to help better engage students in their education. Through this partnership, we can as parents, family and educa- tors better ensure that our stu- dents have every opportunity to reach their goals, at school and into the future. I wish all of our parents, stu- dents and staff members a won- derful and successful 2017-2018 school year. If you would like to learn more about our school district, I would encourage you to go to our web- site, Check us out on Twitter or Facebook at @WayneCountyPS. You can also contact our adminis- trative offices by phone at 919-731- 5900. We look forward to serving you and helping your children have a smooth transition into the new school year. Dr. Michael J.
