JULY 12-18, 2017 UCW 21 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM Summer at the Cape Fear Botanical Garden is a special time. e plants are in bloom and there is a wide variety of events for patrons of all ages to enjoy. One of these events is a summer series called ird ursday. On July 20, the family-friendly ird ursday is titled Garden Folk. e evening will feature folk music and author Mark Weathington, who wrote "Gardening in the South." Admis - sion is free with membership or paid admission. e music will be provided by e Parsons. "e Parsons are a folk band that have been performing for over 25 years," said Taryn Hughes, marketing manager at the Cape Fear Botanical Garden. "Caroline Parson is a gifted songwriter, singer and bassist. Jon plays the banjo, guitars and mando - lins. ey will be performing from 6-9 p.m." e gates open at 5 p.m. for this event. e other half of the evening sur - rounds Mark Weathington and his book. Weathington is the director of the North Carolina State University's J.C. Raulston Arboretum in Raleigh and an expert gardener. He has years of experience in a variety of regions. He has worked at coastal botanical gardens and at nurseries in the mountains. is extensive experience allows him to easily address region-specific issues that can pop up in southern gardens. His book is intended for gar - deners with some experience, but he will be available to answer all manner of questions. is is an opportunity to share a passion for gardening and maybe get some answers to difficult gardening questions. In addition to the entertainment planned for the evening, Third Thursdays also invites patrons to enjoy the garden in a different light. The area is always beautiful, but enjoying the familiar trees and flow - ers in the cool evening is an entirely new way to appreciate what it offers. Additionally, each Third Thursday is a unique event with a different theme each month. In August, the theme is Latin Soirée. Another way to enjoy the Cape Fear Botanical Garden's evening beauty is the regular Wine & Whimsy events. The painting class is also held on the third Thursday of every month from 6-8 p.m. This month, the painting features dragonflies. Wine, beer and snacks are available for purchase during the event. All ar- tistic supplies and instruction is pro- vided. Reservations are required as the class is limited to16 participants. All participants must be ages 16 and older. The class is $20 for members and $25 for nonmembers. These are just two examples of events that the Cape Fear Botanical Garden offers. Events span a variety of interests and are held varying times of day to fit a variety of sched- ules. Many events are focused on education, nature appreciation and health.
