During the Revolutionary War Rowan was the leader of the Patriot cause. He served as a Colonel in the French and Indian War. Grove Street, named after William Barry Grove, a Cross Creek native who served as a Federalist congressman from 1791 to 1802. Hay Street, named after John Hay, one of four early commissioners who approved Fayetteville's street plan in 1783. Ray Avenue, formerly known as Hogg Street was names after James Hogg of Hillsborough, a developer who gave land for the courthouse on that site. Ray was his wife's family name, which he preferred to use. (Perhaps because it lacked swine-connotations.) Hogg preferred the name Ray so much that he officially used it as his children's last name.
