FAYETTEVILLE THROUGH THE CENTURIES 1820 Fayetteville Water Works is chartered. 1825 The Lafayette Hotel was built at the corner of Hay and Donaldson streets, financed by Robert Donaldson, Jr. 1832 The completion of The Market House served as the town market through 1906 before being converted to a library from 1908 to 1952. 1833 The Donaldson Academy was built near Hay Street and Hillside Avenue, with Rev. Simeon Colton as the principal. 1835 The start of A.A. MacKethan and Sons Carriage Factory originally organized by Alfred Augustus MacKethan Sr. and Charles T. Gardner. 1837 The Rockfish Manufacturing Co., located on Rockfish Creek, was chartered and established factories to manufacture cotton, wool, flax, hemp and iron. 1839 The Phoenix Co. is chartered and authorized to establish factories for manufacturing cotton and wool on Cross Creek. 1841 The Cross Creek Manufacturing Co. is incorporated to manufacture cotton and wool. 1855 Harnett County is formed from Cumberland. 1858 Fayetteville's first rail line was laid for the Cape Fear and Yadkin Valley to bring coal from the mines in Chatham County. 1859 The Fayetteville Gas Company is organized. 1864 The Fayetteville Military Academy is incorporated 1865 Gen. William T. Sherman's Union army burns the Fayetteville Arsenal, factories and homes in the county. 1867 The Howard School for black students was established. During this year the Cumberland County Republican Party was also organized. 1868 John S. Leary and Isham Sweat were the first two black men to represent Cumberland County in the General Assembly. 1878 With Alexander Graham as superintendent, the Fayetteville Graded Schools began. 1888 B.R. Huske & Co. was founded and was incorporated as Huske Hardware House by B.R. Huske Sr. in 1891. 1891 Hope Mills receives its charter, it was founded in 1766 as Rockfish Village. 1894 Fayetteville's first telephone was installed. 1899 Fayetteville had a 63-page detailed listing directory of people and businesses. 1900 The Republicans of Cumberland County hold a convention at the Market House. 1901 Fayetteville Gas and Electric Co. was bought by the city for $13,500. 1902 Wade T. Saunders drove Fayetteville's first gasoline automobile 1903 Rural mail delivery began in the county with $.02 stamp for postage. 1904 Telephone booths installed by Postal Telegraph for customers sending telegraphs. 1911 Hoke County is formed from Cumberland and Robeson counties. 1918 Camp Bragg was officially established, named after the Confederate general and North Carolina native, Braxton Bragg.
