PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, in 1762, the colonial assembly meeting in New Bern chartered the village of Campbellton on 100 acres of land along the west bank of the Cape Fear River, about a mile east of the unchartered village of Cross Creek; AND WHEREAS, the village of Campbellton was established at the head of navigation on the Cape Fear River, becoming an important inland port and trade center, as well as Cumberland County's second county seat; AND WHEREAS, in 1778, during the American Revolutionary War, Campbellton was combined with the village of Cross Creek and was renamed "Upper" and "Lower" Campbellton, with the seat of county government moving to the former village of Cross Creek; AND WHEREAS, in 1783, Upper and Lower Cambellton were combined and renamed Fayetteville – the first city in the United States named for the young French hero of the American Revolution, General Marquis de Lafayette; AND WHEREAS, during its 250 years of existence, Fayetteville, with its rich cultural diversity, has played a pivotal role in history to include the Liberty Point Resolves of 1775, the ratification of the United States Constitution, the chartering of our nation's first public university, the forming of Tennessee and in later years becoming the home to Fort Bragg; AND WHEREAS, the City of Fayetteville will celebrate its Sestercentennial Anniversary with programs and events designed for the citizens of our city to take advantage of "Celebrating, Educating and Commemorating" our proud heritage. NOW THEREFORE, I, Anthony G. Chavonne, Mayor of the City of Fayetteville, and on behalf of City Council, do hereby proclaim July 1 through December 11, 2012, to be the official period of the Sestercentennial Celebration of the City of Fayetteville and encourage all to join with us in recognizing this historic milestone.
