There is no doubt that our world is built around communication. Someone has said, "we spend the fi rst two years of our life learning how to speak and then we spend the rest of it learning how to be qui- et." There is no such thing as an idle word. Words have shaped the history of man- kind. They have started revolutions and wars and have also brought peace and tranquility. Not only have words shaped our history, but words have been instru- mental in forming us into who we are to- day. Whether it be the words of a parent, grandparent, teacher, mentor or friend, we have all been touched by their guidance and instruction. Spoken in the right way and with sin- cerity, a word can bring cheer, encourage- ment and hope. How many times have we been comforted by a kind and caring word? On the other hand, a word said in haste, in spite or in anger can bring de- feat, discouragement and discord. How many times have we been hurt and sad- dened by someone's words? It is important that we all take notice of how we use our words. Gossip laden, slan- derous and prejudicial words only make our life and the lives of others miserable. Some of the greatest phrases known to man are short but can powerfully impact a life. "I forgive you", "I am sorry", "I love you" and "Thank you" are just a few words we should use often. Rudyard Kipling said it best when he said, "Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind." How will you use your words today?
