Following an "All Stars" round with earlier contes- tants returning in teams of two, the special-ef- fects-makeup competition starts its 12th Syfy season Tuesday, June 13. Host McKenzie Westmore — who hails from Holly- wood's top family of movie and television makeup artists — again sets play- ers on various creative challenges as they vie for $100,000 and the approval of industry-professional judges Glenn Hetrick ("The Hunger Games"), Ve Neill (a three-time Oscar winner, for films including "Mrs. Doubtfire") and Nev- ille Page ("Avatar"). "What we're doing this time," Westmore explains, "is that instead of individ- ual people as contestants, we're doing two teams, almost like two (makeup) shops. On a movie, you would have two shops competing for the job, so that essentially is how this season is going to play out. And I have to relearn certain things; I'm not nec- essarily calling people by name, but by shop." One consistent aspect of "Face Off" is the feed- back Westmore gets about it being all-family viewing. "Many times," she says, "mothers and fathers will come up and thank me because it shows their chil- dren about camaraderie and teamwork and helping one another ... and that it doesn't matter whether you win or not. You are all winners, across the board. "I also love that with younger kids, it's helped parents explain — as I was able to with my own son — that monsters don't exist. I was like, 'Sweet- heart, Patrick (Tatopoulos, Westmore's production-de- signer husband) would be out of a job if monsters existed. He would just go to the forest and pick them up and put them in his movies. But they don't. He has to make them.' And that was the end of it." Also pivotal to "Face Off" as a mentor to contes- tants is Westmore's father Michael, an Oscar winner for "Mask" and a former staple of the "Star Trek" franchise. Indeed, his lat- est book is titled "Makeup Man: Making Up the Stars From Rocky to Star Trek"; his daughter has her own makeup pursuit, marketing her cosmetics line West- more Beauty (with which she appears regularly on QVC). McKenzie Westmore hosts the Season 12 premiere of "Face Off" Tuesday on Syfy. McKenzie Westmore is ready to help amateur makeup artists 'Face Off' again WE CARRY LAWN MOWERS 711 E.
