MAY 24-30, 2017 UCW 27 WWW.UPANDCOMINGWEEKLY.COM WEEKLY HOROSCOPE Will ABC Produce a "Black-ish" spin-off? What did you think of the backdoor pilot on "Black-ish?" I would definitely watch it if ABC picks it up. — Jake It's maybe not the most original idea to send a sitcom kid off to college and build a show around that experience — see "A Different World" — but Zoey (Yara Shahidi) is no more Denise than "Black-ish" is a clone of "The Cosby Show." I enjoyed the episode, which in its depiction of a black dorm under threat of being shut down was actually more reminiscent of the excellent Netflix comedy "Dear White People." Broader for sure, especially in the doltish administration characters played by Chris Parnell and "Veep's" Matt Walsh. With Kenya Burris and Larry Wilmore steering this project, I'd definitely give it a shot. And if it doesn't go forward, I hope they can weave Zoey subplots into the show as effectively as "The Middle" has done with the campus antics of Axl and Sue. Can you give me hope for an ending to "The Glades?" The series, now on Netflix, ended with a cliffhanger in season 4. — Mary I'm not in the false hope business, so I have to advise moving on where this show is concerned. If Netflix were to have rescued this show the way it did "Longmire" (for which we're all grateful), it surely would already have happened. Jeers to A&E for ditching scripted TV. The cable net announced that it's shifting back to an all-reality lineup, meaning our chances of getting another great show like Bates Motel (with Freddie Highmore, pictured) have been, well, killed. Cheers to American Gods for taking a risk. Could Neil Gaiman's out-there opus of battling deities work as a TV show? As soon as we saw the eye-popping visuals and the sparks between stars Ian McShane and Ricky Whittle (right, with McShane), we knew our prayers had been answered. Cheers to Great News for not burying the leads. Andrea Martin and Briga Heelan as mom-daughter colleagues may be the top story at NBC's cable-news comedy, but the crew around them — especially Nicole Richie and John Michael Higgins as vapid newsies — is just as News-worthy. NEWS OF THE WEIRD by CHUCK SHEPPARD It is legal in China to sell electric "building shakers" whose primary purpose, apparently, is to wreak aural havoc on apartment-dwellers' unreasonably noisy neighbors. Models sell for the equivalent of $11 to $58 — each with a long pole to rest on the floor, extending ceiling height to an electric motor braced against the shared ceiling or wall and whose only function is to produce a continuous, thumping beat. Shanghaiist.com found one avenger in Shaanxi province who, frustrated by his miscreant neighbor, turned on his shaker and then departed for the weekend. (It was unclear whether he faced legal or other repercussions.) [Shanghaiist.com, 4-14- 2017] [Oddity Central, 4-17-2017] Can't Possibly Be True Mats Jarlstrom is a folk hero in Oregon for his extensive research critical of the short yellow light timed to the state's red- light cameras, having taken his campaign to TV's "60 Minutes" and been invited to a transportation engineers' convention. In January, Oregon's agency that regulates engineers imposed a $500 fine on Jarlstrom for "practicing engineering" without a state license. (The agency, in fact, wrote that simply using the phrase "I am an engineer" is illegal without a license, even though Jarlstrom has a degree in engineering and worked as an airplane camera mechanic.) He is suing to overturn the fine. [The Oregonian, 4-25-2017] Last year, surgeons at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP), for only the second time in history, removed a tumor "sitting" on the peanut-sized heart of a fetus while the heart was still inside the mother's womb — in essence successfully operating on two patients simultaneously. The Uruguayan mother said her initial reaction upon referral to CHOP's surgeons was to "start laughing, like what, they do that?" (The baby's December birth revealed that the tumor had grown back and had to be removed again, except this time, through "ordinary" heart surgery.) [KYW-TV (Philadelphia), 3-30-2017] News You Can Use Earn $17,500 for two months' "work" doing nothing at all! France's space medicine facility near Toulouse is offering 24 openings, paying 16,000 euros each, for people simply to lie in bed continuously for two weeks so it can study the effects of virtual weightlessness. The institute is serious about merely lying there: All bodily functions must be accomplished while keeping at least one shoulder on the bed.
