9 "F ourth but first." It is a phrase one is likely to read or hear uttered when visiting Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and, heard for the first time, it might sound like a catchy mantra. It's more. Wing historian Dr. Roy "Doc" Heidicker will assist with the narration of the air show at this year's Wings Over Wayne, and will gladly recount to inquisitors just how that came to be. A large man with a lecturer's voice, Doc's encyclopedic knowledge of the kind of "Did You Know" facts that have made the 4th Fighter Wing the Air Force's "premier wing" is almost as impressive as the aircraft the air show will feature. He shares that knowledge with new airmen as they in- process when first assigned to the base. And he will share it with thousands this weekend as their eyes tilt skyward to see the U.S. Navy's Blue Angels and other aerial acrobats perform. 17DCT0517J© 'Fourth but First': What it means to be the 4th Fighter Wing Wing historian Dr. Roy 'Doc' Heidicker will gladly recount to the visitors of Wings Over Wayne exactly how the 4th Fighter Wing became the 'Fourth but First.'
