28 T he "Tora, Tora, Tora" Pearl Harbor commemo- ration show recalls the infamous attack of the morning of Dec. 7, 1941, by Imperial Japan through a real-world recreation of its events. Beginning in 1972, the show originat- ed from six replica Japanese planes used in the film "Tora!, Tora!, Tora!." Those aircraft were donated to the Commemorative Air Force, the organiza- tion which Tora operates under. With the motto of "Lest We Forget," the Tora show flew for the first time at the Galveston Air Show on June 25, 1972. The group collaborates with American and Japanese veterans to produce as authentic a reproduction as possible, with the goal of acting as a living histo- ry museum. The show goes to great lengths to nail down small details, such as traditional Japanese salutes. Tora lead Mike Burke said that the show is full of close encounters and dra- matic sights. "We've got a Zero in a strafing pattern, a Val dive bomber, one of the Nakajima torpedo bombers, doing bombing pat- terns," he said, references three aircraft models used by the Japanese in World War II. "This is all taking place within one quarter of a mile, all these planes flying around within 250 feet of each other." The Tora team is made up entirely of volunteers, whom Burke said work on the aircraft for around five hours for each hour spent in the air.
