We ALL Serve. The difference in the two is exactly as the name suggests — the height at which the parachute is deployed. Baros said the gargantuan American flag will be attached to two people in the parachute team, so it will appear flat against the sky when people look upward. Baros said the team will demonstrate a combat equipment jump, where they carry their rucksacks and imitation M4 rifles made of rubber while wearing oxygen masks to demonstrate to the crowd what it would be like if the crew was landing behind enemy lines or parachuting into combat. The Black Daggers' mission is to per- form live aerial demonstrations in sup- port of Army special operations, com- munity relations and recruiting. The team is composed of volunteers from throughout Army special opera- tions, meaning the Black Daggers have diverse backgrounds and are skilled in various military specialties including special forces, rangers, civil affairs, psy- chological operations, and signal and support. The Black Daggers are famous for exiting aircraft at high altitudes, some- times upward of 25,000 feet — which explains the need for oxygen masks, as air is paper thin at that altitude. During their two-mile plummet to the earth, members of the team use their hands, arms, legs and shoulders to maneuver their body and control the direction of the drop. They are most well known for HALO jumps, often deploying parachutes close to the earth traveling close to 120 mph. The Black Daggers team members have an average combined age of 33 years old, and have each done an aver- age of 560 free-fall jumps. The technique the Black Daggers are famous for — the HALO jump — is a form of stealth insertion first used in the Vietnam War by the Military Assistance Command, Vietnam Studies and Observations Group to land troops and equipment behind enemy lines. The team will kick off both days of the air show on May 20 and May 21, land- ing inside Seymour Johnson Air Force Base. Continued from 16 Black Daggers
