An 800-foot- long American flag descending rapidly from the sky is a cause for celebration, not concern — it's how the Black Daggers will kick off both days of the Wings Over Wayne Air Show this year. Sgt. 1st Class Allan Baros said the Black Daggers — the official U.S. Army Special Operations Command Parachute Demonstration Team — will open both days of the air show with a demonstration parachute jump consisting of high altitude jumps that mimic real combat situations. Baros said between four and seven jumpers will leap out of the aircraft and hurtle toward the earth as "The Star-Spangled Banner" plays in the background. "Two people hold the American flag and they counter each other, turning left and right while flying forward, and they're basically carrying it so it's flat against the sky to whoever is looking at it," Baros said. "About halfway through the jump, one person will disconnect the bottom of the flag so it falls vertical and is carried by one person." The jumpers will demonstrate both a High Altitude High Opening and High Altitude Low Opening — HAHO and HALO — jumps. The official U.S. Army Special Operations Command Parachute Demonstration Team, Black Daggers, will drop into Wings Over Wayne with high altitude jumps that mimic real combat situations.
