Miracle in the Desert: The untold story of what it took to win the war I n hindsight, Operation Desert Storm might appear to have been relatively swift and easy victory. A weeks-long air cam- paign set the stage for a 100-hour ground war that led to then-President Saddam Hussein's speedy withdrawal from Kuwait. But for the men and women stationed at Seymour Johnson Air Force Base at the time, the run-up to the war and the deployment to the Middle East that preceded it were vast undertakings. Add to the mix the phasing out of the F-4 Phantom in favor of the more technologically advanced, but not yet battle-tested F-15E, things got pretty complicated pretty quickly. Phasing out the F-4 in favor of the F-15E Strike Eagle made for unique challenges during Operation Desert Storm, but success was swift and for Ret. Col.
