WHY I STRIVE
FOR EXCELLENCE
SHANNON SEILER
CERTIFIED HIGHER EDUCATION PROFESSIONAL (CHEP) IN TEACHING
ADJUNCT MEDICAL ASSISTANT INSTRUCTOR — YTI CAREER INSTITUTE
How many years of experience do you have
in higher education?
I have six years of experience in higher education.
How did you begin your career in higher
education?
I graduated in October 2008 as a medical assistant from YTI
Career Institute-Altoona. Approximately one year later, I
received a call from YTI to interview as an adjunct instructor
in their first responder/EMT program. Aer reviewing my
credentials, they determined I was better suited for a different
program, which is now known as medical billing and coding.
Aer serving as an instructor in that program for a while, I
transferred into the medical assistant program. As an adjunct
instructor, I am able to teach among the various programs at
the school.
What part of your job brings you the most
personal satisfaction?
Several parts of my job bring me great personal satisfaction.
First, knowing I am helping students expand their knowledge
and skills is wonderful. Second, it is rewarding when students
compliment me on my knowledge and skills. Being able to
relay information and class materials accurately and effectively
keeps them engaged. ey enjoy when I share personal
experiences to tie in the topic at hand. Students are then able
to see the connection between the topic and the real world.
ird, I find it satisfying that students trust me to guide them
in the right direction. It is great to know they feel comfortable
asking questions when they are feeling unsure of a specific
topic or need that extra boost of confidence to know they can
successfully complete assigned tasks.
