ByChipThompson editor@redbluffdailynews.com @editorchip on Twitter LOS MOLINOS The Mercy Lady Warriors softball team took both games of a double header Wednesday afternoon over the host Los Molinos Bulldogs, 12-10 in the first game and 4-1 in the second. Playing as the home team in the first game, a makeup for a rained out April 7 game in Red Bluff, the Warriors got on the board early with 2 in the bottom of the first. The Bulldogs tied it up in the top of the third, but the Warriors tacked on 3 more in the bottom half of the inning to lead 5-2. Mercy's big inning was the fourth, when they piled up another 7 runs and built a 12-2 lead. In the fifth it was the Bulldogs' turn and they plated 8 runs to pull within 2 but couldn't keep the rally going and took the loss. Mercy's Aubrey Bell was 1-2 with a home run, Maggie Sheppard went 2-3 with a double and Li- anne Schaeffer was 2-3 and scored twice. Los Molinos' Heather Rodriguez was a double shy of the cycle and went 3-4 with a triple, a home run and 5 RBI; Anahis SOFTBALL LADY WARRIORS SWEEP LOS MOLINOS Me rc y t ak es bo th e nd s o f d ou bl eh ea de r CHIPTHOMPSON-DAILYNEWS Mercy's Audrey Bell slides safely into second in the first inning Wednesday against Los Molinos. By Cam Inman Bay Area News Group SANTACLARA Stanford's Solomon Thomas kept alive two recent draft trends in becoming the 49ers' choice with Thurs- day's No. 3 overall pick. This is third straight draft they chose a defen- sive linemen with their top pick, as he follows the Oregon tandem of Arik Armstead (2015) and De- Forest Buckner (2016). Also, this is the second straight year the 49ers used a first-round pick on a Stanford product, trad- ing up last year to select guard Joshua Garnett at No. 28 overall. Speaking of Stan- ford, new general man- ager John Lynch not only went there, too, but he returned to finish his de- gree in 2014 and even partnered with Thomas on a class project, accord- ing to Sports Illustrated. The 49ers moved down a slot from No. 2 so the Chicago Bears could move up to draft quarterback Mitchell Trubisky. In re- turn, the 49ers got the No. 3 pick, a third-round pick (No. 67), a fourth-round pick (No. 111) and a 2018 third-round pick. Lynch, in a KNBR 680-AM interview, said Trubisky was the 49ers' highest-rated quarter- back but were concerned about his short, 13-start career at North Carolina. Lynch noted that trade talks with the Bears picked up steam Wednes- day, and that 49ers chief strategy officer Paraag Marathe closed the deal that netted the 49ers three extra draft picks to simply move down a spot and pass on Trubisky. BASEBALL Spartans split twin bi ll w it h Enterprise The Dodgers' Chase Utley slides into home plate to score past the tag from Giants catcher Nick Hundley during the 10th inning in San Francisco on Thursday. By Andrew Baggarly Bay Area News Group SAN FRANCISCO If the Giants and Dodgers proved anything in their first rivalry series of the season, it's that they are evenly matched. That's less impressive than it sounds when they're both struggling to score runs, mak- ing routine mistakes in the field and battling for third place in the NL West. The Giants gave away their chance to win the series on Thursday, imploding in the 10th inning of a 5-1 loss at AT&T Park. The better team is supposed to win. That is the way this is supposed to work. But some- times, the team that plays worst clears its throat. The Giants did just about everything wrong in the Dodg- ers' four-run 10th. Cory Gear- rin drew a bad matchup when the Dodgers sent up pinch hitter Adrian Gonzalez, and he issued a leadoff walk. The Giants got some rotten luck when pinch hitter Chase Ut- ley rolled an infield single along the third base chalk line. Then left-hander Steven Okert walked Yasmani Gran- dal to load the bases. Andrew Toles followed with a line single to center field, and both teams jostled to see which could do a worse job of screwing up the rest of the play. Utley got a bad read, failed to score a sec- ond run and held up at third base. Grandal, assuming Utley would score, ran to third. But Giants second baseman Kelby Tomlinson accepted the relay throw in shallow center field and erred by throwing to third base, allowing Grandal to retreat.
