There is nothing quite like a good book, and the Friends of Steele Memorial Library know it well. The group will hold its annual book sale at the N.C. Pickle Festival Friday, April 28 and Saturday, April 29. The sale, a tradition for years, is designed to benefit the library by providing funds for some of the special programs and summer activities it provides for the communi- ty. Assistant Branch Manager Melanie Powell said the Friends of Steele Memorial Library have been aiding the library since before she began work there in 2009. In 2015 the sale moved into a new warehouse locat- ed behind the library, where all of the books are shelved and easily accessible to anyone. Ms. Powell said the new layout makes the sale feel much more official. "It's split into sections based on the genre of the book," she said. "It almost feels like you're walking into a book store." The reading programs that the sale helps fund encourage kids to read by giving them reading goals during each week. Then, the kids come back to the library for a presentation or other event, and to have their progress checked up on. Those events have included visits by N.C. aquariums, arts and crafts days and more. Craft days are also available for adults, which Ms. Powell said is another way the book sale benefits the library. "It has always helped out with our summer reading and special programs," she said. "The Friends of Steele Memorial Library have bought supplies, given us resources. We have arts and crafts nights for adults, and they have always helped out by giving us supplies for that as well." The book sale will run from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday. Look for the open doors to the Friends' warehouse behind the library at 119 W. Main St. The Friends of Steele Memorial Library will hold its annual book sale Friday and Saturday during the N.C. Pickle Festival to raise money for the library's special programs.
