John, Paul, George and Ringo are their charming selves as they glibly mock the stardom they're experiencing. But the real star is the music, about a dozen songs including a concert performance of "She Loves You," muffled by the continuous screams of teenage girls. "This Is Spinal Tap" (1984) In his feature film directorial debut, Rob Reiner drew rave reviews for this mockumentary about a bombastic English heavy metal band on the downside of its career, bogged down by canceled concert dates, dwindling popularity and deaths of multiple drummers and beset by egotism and infighting. Michael McKean, Christopher Guest and Harry Shearer star as the embattled rockers. "Almost Famous" (2000) Arguably the best of its genre, director Cameron Crowe's love letter to 1970s rock music follows the ego-fueled travails of an up-and-coming band on what could be its watershed tour, as seen through the eyes of an impressionable teenage journalist (Patrick Fugit). Billy Crudup, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Kate Hudson, Frances McDormand, Jason Lee and Zooey Deschanel are also in the large and talented cast. "Walk the Line" (2005) Joaquin Phoenix and Reese Witherspoon put in stellar performances – and also acquitted themselves quite nicely as singers – in James Mangold's excellent chronicle of Johnny Cash's rise as a musical artist in the 1960s and eventual partnership with June Carter.
