Let'stakeawalkto- gether and as we do, we come upon a beautiful gar- den and in the garden a gently mov- ing stream cascading before our feet. Along its banks are cheerful yel- low-faced daisies. The water is crys- tal clear. We are drawn to drink from this stream; who wouldn't be? But in our traveler's guide we are warned that though the water looks refreshing, we shouldn't drink it for it flows out of a contami- nated spring. So now let's visit The Shack, as many God Talk readers have. The writer, Paul Young, sets out to tell a story, (some would say a story of his life's quest to find meaning amidst the inexplicable pain he experienced at a young age). Some would say of The Shack that it is just a story. But, it is so much more. It is a story about God instructing a hurting man, nicknamed Mack. We are drawn in to drink from the story, but its wa- ter comes from a contami- nated spring. So, how does one re- spond to those who em- braced The Shack by say- ing it warmed their heart, without hurting feelings? Yet, out of loving concern it must be said, the god of The Shack is but an idol of human invention far re- moved from the awesome God of the Bible. We see this in the trou- bled Mack's first meet- ing with "Papa." Note, the peer-like familiarity be- tween the two. Unlike Mack, when Isaiah sees the Lord high and lifted up, he cries out, "Woe is me." The disciples of Je- sus experienced fear at the sound of God's voice. I cannot begin to image Mack even able to speak before the holy God, let alone mock or accuse Him. Sam Worthington, "Mack", is a dedicated dad with a troubled past. While on a family camp- ing trip, Mack's daughter is kidnapped. Police de- termine that his daughter was murdered by a serial killer in a hunting shack, but do not find her body. Later, Mack finds a note in his mailbox asking him to come back to the shack where his daughter was killed, signed by "Papa," his wife's name for God. So, what does The Shack teach us about God? The movie alludes to God as Trinity but goes on to di- vide Him into a threesome lacking power and author- ity to govern the affairs of men. We meet a three- some weak but kind. And unlike the God revealed in Scripture as Spirit, we have a missing Father, and a bodied spirit. It is under- standable, based on Paul Young's life, that the Fa- ther image of God trou- bled him. In the movie, we see a god who sees people as rainbow-colored blobs, who says one-line zingers and dances to pop music alongside the Holy Spirit, who appears as three peo- ple, who does not find sin disturbing, who does not balk at sin, nor call for re- pentance. The cross is not God's idea but man's. The Cross is discussed, but what was accomplished through it is unclear. Papa speaks of truth that sets everyone free, and that truth is in the wood shop (referring to the Jesus fig- ure inside working on a project). The silence re- garding "the project" of Jesus to offer Himself as an atonement for our sins is deafening. The concept of hell is brought up. But the real sense of the scene is that no one will be punished for their sins in hell — even murderers and abus- ers — because Papa loves them just as Mack does his own children. The movie removes the con- cept of atonement and re- moves the need for a Sav- ior to die in our place. The god of The Shack is not in- terested in justice in an ul- timate sense. Was this depiction of God by the author of The Shack intentional or sim- ply literary license? In his recent book Lies We Be- lieve About God we learn it was intentional. As you read his recent book it be- comes clear that in The Shack, the author is put- ting forward his belief about God. I would concede The Shack offers an opportu- nity to point an unbeliever to the goodness of God or help a fellow-believer find freedom from guilt and shame. But, that is to point them away from the god of The Shack and to the God of the Bible. God's Word warns against false representa- tions and worship of God. Though some advocates of The Shack (not all, by any means) may feel closer to a god who is different than the God revealed in Scripture, such closeness is not toward God at all, but toward an idol con- structed in the image of our contemporary need for acceptance, and forged by our resistance to repen- tance, submission, and ac- countability. Presenting God as sim- ply a good-hearted sage who's always there for a chat is ultimately a cruel and dangerous thing to do. InJuly1982theRev. Dallas Dubke became Pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church Red Bluff and Mt. Olive Lutheran Church Corning where he has served for the past 30 years.
