Comprised of 4th - 8th graders, these young men are playing their hearts out in their inaugural season. According to volunteer coach, David Herndon, the dream came to reality last fall when they first started practicing as a unit. "I began to think about what it would be like to have a baseball team at Trinity Christian School back in the spring of 2016 as my boys were getting close to middle school age. I talked with my two sons about starting a team and they said 'go for it, Dad.' I set up a meeting with the Head of School, Mrs. Tiffany Walker, to see if she would support and approve a baseball team at Trinity. I told her up front it would not cost the school any money and that I had a group of young men committed to playing and strong parental support for this endeavor." Herndon went on to say, "These young players worked hard and played well as a team. What stood out most was this Trinity Baseball Team had heart and chemistry." Working with such a diverse group of students presented some unique challenges, but the team has come together and bonded. Their enthusiasm is on display as they proudly wear their jerseys to school on game days. Aside from the skills necessary to throw, bat, and round the bases, the coaches hope to instill qualities that will serve these kids for a lifetime. "First, we as a team represent Christ in all we do and that includes how we act out on the ball field. Secondly, we were going to learn to win and lose in the right way by showing good character and sportsmanship. Thirdly, we were always going to do our best. We told them 'we play together as a team, we win together as a team'." These kids are making it happen on the field, but there have been many volunteers and donors working behind the scenes. Donations provided the resources needed for their uniforms and established local teams shared their reserved field time for practice and play. The parents all chip in to cover the costs of the umpires and Little League and Cleveland County coaches are lending their support as well - all for the love of the game. The 2017 TCS Patriots are coached by David Herndon, Mark Wilson, Craig Nelon, and Ron Wilkins. The team roster includes: Tanner Herndon, Brandt Herndon, Hayden Wilson, Lane Nelon, Jacob Wilkins, Aaron Cuthbertson, Meridian Leffew, Hudson Camp, Kaden Lewis, Scottie Johnson, Caden Duncan, Alex Thompson, and Kiefer Moore. When asked how they felt about being a part of this team, most of the players answered it was "special" or "exciting to be playing for TCS and with my friends from school". "We are setting the standard for the future teams..." and "we are making history" were other responses. It is obvious that all those involved are having a great experience. There have been wins and there have been losses, but sportsmanship and character have won out every single game.
