ByJulieZeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF Sunny weather brought out car enthusiasts and a number of car owners on Sat- urday for the annual Red Bluff Round-Up Kickoff Car Show held on Pine Street between Main and Washington streets. "With bad weather yesterday and it being Easter weekend we weren't sure about the turnout, but it's a beautiful day and we had a lot of people come out," said event chairman Rob Mc- Grew. "Most of them are local cars from Chico to Redding, but we have a few from out of the area, including a 1969 Corvette from Utah." Numbers were up this year with between 55 and 60 cars par- ticipating in the event, which in- cluded a raffle as a fundraiser for the Red Bluff Rotary, which puts the event on. CAR SHOW Sunnyweather brings out car en th us ia st s By Don Thompson The Associated Press SACRAMENTO Supporters of one long-shot bid to make California an independent nation ended their effort on Monday, while an- other group said it will launch a new campaign for a statewide vote next year. The drive to make the na- tion's most populous state its own country, with what would be the world's sixth-largest econ- omy, has drawn extra interest af- ter last year's election of Republi- can Donald Trump as president. But the Yes California Inde- pendence Campaign faltered af- ter its president, Louis Marinelli, revealed ties to Russia. Marinelli said in a lengthy message to sup- porters Monday that he is seek- ing permanent residence in Rus- sia because of his "frustration, disappointment and disillusion- ment with the United States." The secretary of state's office confirmed that Marcus Ruiz Ev- ans, the group's vice president, withdrew the California Nation- hood ballot measure. Brandon Borer, 25, of Orland, was facing westbound in a south- bound lane for undetermined reason and was struck by two vehicles going southbound, ac- cording to a news release issued Monday morning by the Califor- nia Highway Patrol. Borer was arrested on suspi- cion of felony driving while un- der the influence of alcohol. He suffered minor injuries. Noel Fahey, 43, of Stayton, Or- egon, who suffered moderate in- juries and was taken to St. Eliz- abeth Community Hospital for treatment, was driving his 2006 Toyota Sienna van southbound on I-5 at 70 mph, according to the release. Behind Fahey's vehicle was Letitia Whitcomb, 70, and her passenger, Richard Whitcomb, 82, both of Orland. The two sus- tained major injuries as a result of the collision and were taken to St. Elizabeth Hospital for treat- ment. Borer's vehicle, a 2005 Chev- rolet Cavalier, was struck in the right rear by Fahey's vehi- cle and then was struck on the right side by Whitcomb's vehi- cle, which also collided with Fa- hey's vehicle. The collision blocked both southbound lanes on I-5 for about 20 minutes, creating a slight backup. Borer was determined to be the cause of the collision and was arrested, according to the release. The collision was still under investigation Monday. COLLISION Fourinjuredincrashoninterstate By Julie Zeeb jzeeb@redbluffdailynews.com @DN_Zeeb on Twitter RED BLUFF Sunny weather brought out a good crowd, filling Washington Street be- tween Oak and Pine streets Saturday, for the Ron and Shirley Judson Red Bluff Round-Up Chili Cook-off held Saturday. "Ron Judson brought the International Chili Society (ICS) cook-off to the fair- grounds and it's grown so much from there," said Rotary President and event chair- woman Michelle Blunkall. "It's tripled from just 2009. We had six people's choice contestants that year and this year we have about 24." In addition to the people's choice, which is made up of community organizations, there were 20 red chili en- tries, 16 green chili entries and 10 salsa entries in the ICS portion of the event, Blunk- all said. "We had probably about 3,000 people come through last year so hopefully with better weather we'll have more at this year's event," Blunkall said. "This event would not be possible with- out all the businesses that do people's choice and we're very fortunate to have our distin- guished official judges. We have 16 dignitaries including the Red Bluff City Council, California Highway Patrol of- ficers and a supervisor." Blunkall said she was grateful for Kendall May- field, owner of the Round-Up Saloon, who hosted and pre- pared the dinner Friday for the ICS competitors the 16 judges during the tasting and scoring of the chili. She also thanked Dave and Kathy Hip- skind, the official judge and scorekeeper for the event. "This event is a way to wel- come people for the Round- Up and all the money earned goes to high school scholar- ships," Blunkall said. "We hope to raise between $8,000 and $10,000, which is up from 2009 when we brought in $2,300."
