During '10, BH1072 Russell Valleroy '10, BH1075 Joshua Nixon '13, BH1093 T ransferring from the University of Missouri- St. Louis his junior year, Paul Telthorst '74, BH530 knew one person at Rolla—his roommate Bruce Kates '74, BH529, UMSL transfer student as well. Bruce, a swimmer, was recruited by Steve Suellentrop '71, BH400, a varsity swimmer, and encouraged Paul to join Beta Eta as well. Falling victim to Bruce's persistent persuasion, Paul joined the Chapter and became a part of something bigger than himself. "I never expected to play sports again in college or get involved in extracurricular activities. Being a part of a team and helping others succeed changed my life and created the bond of friendships with my fraternity brothers that I kept for the rest of my life," he said. "Working with others and helping others succeed as teams were skills that I used in the Navy and the rest of my career." Paul was accepted into the Navy Nuclear Power Program his senior year and became a nuclear submarine officer. After six years of active duty in the Navy, he went to work in the commercial nuclear power industry for 33 years and retired from the industry in 2015. "Beta Eta taught me to work hard, manage my time, and make friends. It taught me to sacrifice and work for the goals of the Chapter in addition to learning leadership and organizational skills," he said. "The TKE House challenged me to work for a larger ideal of helping my fraternity achieve its goals." Because Beta Eta had such an impact on Paul's formation as a person, he was motivated to contribute to the capital campaign and offer current undergraduates the same opportunities for growth and friendship. "I wanted to see the legacy of Beta Eta live on and have other fraternity brothers share the same experience of friendship and brotherhood that I experienced," he said. "Each donation contributes to the growth and survival of the Chapter House. There is tremendous competition on campus between fraternities and student housing and the new Chapter House is essential to continue the legacy of Beta Eta at MS&T." Throughout the years, Paul has kept in touch with the Chapter through his brother, Pete Telthorst '75, BH541, who has stayed notably active as an alumnus. Pete joined Beta Eta a year after Paul and they played defense together for the Chapter's intramural soccer team. One of Paul's most cherished memories is winning the intramural soccer championship in the fall of 1975 alongside Pete and Bruce, Brett Crotty '74, BH532, Kurt Wilhelm '73, BH489, Mark Moran '74, BH512, Kevin Lahay '75, BH547, Bob Bieg '74, BH513, Bill Warwick '74, BH509, Scott Charpentier '73, BH490, Kent Richardson '74, BH516, Joe Vitale '75, BH535, Paul Fellin '74, BH510, and Frank Bauer '74 BH520, among others. "It was a great experience being on a selfless team that played as one, but especially playing defense with my brother, Pete," Paul said. "Other fond memories were the efforts involved in winning the overall intramural championship in 1975 and being named Top TKE Chapter in 1975." Paul is thankful for his time in Beta Eta and advises alumni who have lost touch with the Chapter to reflect on their undergraduate years and renew the friendships they made as collegians. "We all have a common bond having walked the halls of Beta Eta on 1107 State Street," he said. "What you did during your time at Beta Eta helped build the legacy for the first 70 years; what you give to help launch the new Chapter House will help build the Beta Eta legacy for the next 70 years." Paul and his wife, Janel, have been married for 37 years and live in Mahomet, Ill. Paul can be reached at pjtelthorst@mchsi.com.
