last look Local medical spa makes Inc. 500 list By Van Mitchell Speci M al to The Business Times ariposa MedSpa recently was named to Inc. Magazine's 2012 Inc. 500 list. With locations in Oklahoma City and Edmond, the company landed at No. 259. For more than 30 years, Inc. has celebrat- ed the fastest-growing private companies in America. To rank among the 2012 Inc. 500, a company had to thrive through three of the toughest years the nation's economy has seen in recent years. Mariposa MedSpa opened its doors at its Oklahoma City location at 1907 N. Broadway in September 2007. The Edmond offi ce at 1489 E. 15th St. opened in January 2011. Kristy Murrow, manager of Mariposa Med- Spa, and a licensed physician's assistant, said she submitted information about the business to the magazine earlier this year. Murrow added that she was surprised that the company made the list so early in its exis- tence. She said they will receive their award at a conference in early October in Phoenix. "I got a phone call from them that it looked as though we would make the list," Murrow said. "Shortly after that we got our letter. I was very surprised just because we had only been in business for fi ve years. I thought they would look at larger companies that are more established. I felt like it was a long shot for us. I was really thrilled how that turned out." A medical spa (medspa) is a facility whose medical program is run under the strict su- pervision of a licensed physician, according to the International Medical Spa Association. Medical Spas utilize lasers and intense pulsed light technology in addition to medical procedures like skin resurfacing, Botox, fi ll- er injections, hair removal and other medical beauty procedures without surgeries. Clients also can get traditional spa services like facial and massages. Murrow received her Bachelor of Science degree in education from Southern Nazarene University in 1999 and her Master of Health Sciences degree as a physician's assistant from the University of Oklahoma Health Sci- ence Center in 2000. She is also board certi- fi ed by the NCCPA. She has practice experi- ence in women's health, urology, family medi- cine and radiation oncology. She is a member of the Oklahoma Association of Physician's Assistants, American Society of Laser Medi- 30 cine and Surgery and Amer- ican Academy of Aesthetic Medicine. Murrow said she decid- ed to submit information to the magazine as a way to gauge how the business is doing. "It was a benchmark," she said. "I didn't know what to expect. I was hoping we would be on it. I felt like we should be based on our company numbers from pre- vious years. I really wanted to see how we are doing." Murrow said Mariposa's magazine listing has gar- nered positive reviews from its clients. "It has been very well re- Mariposa MedSpa recently was named to Inc. Magazine' 500 list. Murrow said adding a Mariposa location in Edmond made sense and it has been pay- ing off. "Last year was right on track with what the Oklahoma City offi ce did the fi rst year," Mur- row said. "It kind of took off very consistent- ly from day one. There was a need here. The location was right. We had a lot of patients coming from North Oklahoma City and Ed- mond to Midtown. I felt like we would have a good foundation here." Murrow said part of their commitment to their patients and clients is keeping up to date with the latest technol- ogy. "We attribute our success to the consider- able amount of time we spend researching the newest technol- ogies and treat- ments, and pro- viding the best results and ex- The Business Times of Edmond, September 2012 s 2012 Top ceptional patient experience," Murrow said. Murrow said Mariposa wouldn't have the success it does today without the commit- ment and dedication of its employees. "Mariposa has 10 employees," she said. "Without each and every one of those people we don't create those kinds of accomplish- ments. We have great patients and clients and our staff is outstanding. Every single person plays a vital role here. I think that is the se- cret to our success here. We would still be doing what we are doing even if we didn't make the list. We wouldn't do anything dif- ferent." Photo Provided Photo Provided
