the lion Tattler illinois beta Chapter of Sigma Alpha Epsilon • The University of illinois spring 2017 A s we pass the midpoint of the spring semester, the members of illinois Beta are continuing to build upon the strong foundation from last fall. After a competitive election process, our chapter executive board welcomed four new members from the freshman class of 2020 to leadership roles as representatives of their class. This new group of leaders has done a great job adapting and learning to take on their roles while improving chapter efficiency. returning House Manager Joe Raucci '19 has helped welcome in our new house director, Brian schnitz. Together, the two have brought house damages to an all-time low, while increasing the general upkeep of the chapter house. Our recruitment committee, led by Kyle Gattari '19, recruited a strong new member class of 14 men this spring. The new pledge class includes five members of the illinois football program, continuing the trend of athletes within illinois Beta. Philanthropy on the Ice in early February, eight brothers traveled to the University of Wisconsin-Madison to provide support for Wisconsin Alpha Chapter's annual boot hockey tournament. After a great weekend, more than $7,000 was raised to support Lily's Fund for Epilepsy research in Madison. Additionally, our local illinois Beta hockey team participated in the annual Fraternity Face-Off against Zeta Beta Tau, raising $7,100 for the Brett Learner Memorial scholarship Fund and picking up a second- straight victory. On March 15, our members hit the ice again for the 2017 spring Classic, benefiting the Huntsman Cancer Foundation. The hockey team coach, Sam Keehn '19, and captain, Sam Papas '19, confidently celebrated our chapter's third victory that night. Fence Committee Formed, Negotiations Underway recently, illinois Beta has established a fence committee under the leadership of member Yoni Weissmen '19 with the purpose of constructing a fence around the back end of the property facing the park. With this fence, we hope to increase chapter usage of this area while separating it from the surrounding apartments. We set a goal to finish construction before the weather starts to get nice again, allowing for members to use it this spring. The committee, along with alumni support, has been overseeing negotiations between the chapter and landlord to broker an agreement. Members have rallied behind this cause and all efforts within the chapter have been focused toward finalizing and completing this improvement as soon as possible. Alumni Support Leads to Chapter Growth We truly appreciate the guidance our alumni mentors have provided and i believe that now, more than ever, we are starting to see that guidance pay off. Member involvement coupled with alumni support helped our spring initiation ceremony be one of the strongest in recent years. As always, we welcome all alumni to stop by the chapter house and get a chance to meet current members. Feel free to reach out with questions about the house or if you'd just like to get an update on the chapter.
