4 www.DesertMessenger.com April 5, 2017 By Joanne Winer The Quartzsite Community Thrift Store, which started in 2011 was formed as a way to give money back to the community organizations that were struggling to keep their pro- grams going. The thrift store has been giving out money to many of the or- ganizations in town over the past 6 years, and the total amount that they have donated back to the community is a staggering $64,000!! Not bad for a little thrift store run totally by volun- teers and the goodness of the people who donate items for them to sell. The popular store has been do- nating to groups like the Police, Fire Dept., Search and Rescue, Church Youth Programs, Summer and Af- ter School Programs, Boy Scouts, 4-H Club, Isaiah 58, the schools, Parks and Recreation, Metal Detect- ing Club, Food Bank, Senior Center, and more. They have provided these groups with extra funding that has really helped make a difference in whether their programs were able to continue in some cases. At a recent board meeting, they again gave out funds to three local organizations--they donated mon- ey to the After School Program and Summer Program, the Quartzsite Historical Society, and Celia's Rain- bow Gardens. These funds were very appreciated by those who received them! They are hoping to be able to give out more every month depend- ing on income and expenses at the store. Because of the generosity of the people who donate items for sale, and also to those who come to the store to buy them, they have been doing a great service to the community by giving back as much as they can. The backbone of the Thrift Store is its volunteers who sort, clean, wash, tag and display the items that come in--not an easy job, but has to be done. The store looks great and it's always nice to be greeted with a smile and a hello. If you have items that can be used to help the store help others, please bring them during open hours to the back of the store. The store is now on its summer hours Thursday, Friday and Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. This is such a great thing for our community, and helps many others who would not get the funds needed to keep going otherwise. Your support is greatly appreciated. Community Thrift store donates to community Three-week pavement project scheduled on Highway 95 south of Quartzsite, north of Yuma Proving Ground, beginning March 29 Roadway narrowed to one lane only in active work zone A pavement-preservation proj- ect on Highway 95 just north of the Yuma Proving Ground could cause delays for drivers who use the roadway between Quartzsite and Interstate 8. However, travel between the city of Yuma and the proving ground should not be af- fected. The Arizona Department of Trans- portation is scheduled to begin the three-week project on 10 miles of Highway 95 between mileposts 70 and 80 on Wednesday, March 29. Work is scheduled from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday-Friday until Wednesday, April 19. As always, schedules are subject to change because of weather or other un- foreseen factors. Highway 95 will be narrowed to one lane only while work occurs in half-mile increments. Flaggers will guide motorists through the open travel lane. The speed limit in the active work zone will be reduced to 45 mph. Drivers should pro- ceed through the work zone with caution, slow down and watch for construction personnel and equip- ment. ADOT works to inform the public about planned highway restrictions and closures, but it's possible that unscheduled impacts might occur because of weather or other fac- tors.
