The National Prescription Drug Take-Back Day aims to provide a safe, convenient, and re- sponsible means of disposing of prescrip- tion drugs, while also educating the general public about the po- tential for abuse and medications. Unused or expired prescription medi- cations are a public safety issue, leading to accidental poisoning, overdose, and abuse. Pharmaceutical drugs can be just as dangerous as street drugs when taken without a prescription or a doctor's supervision. The non- medical use of prescription drugs ranks second only to marijuana as the most common form of drug abuse in America. The majority of teenagers abusing prescription drugs get them from family and friends – and the home medicine cabinet. Unused pre- scription drugs thrown in the trash can be re- trieved and abused or illegally sold. Unused drugs that are fl ushed contaminate the water supply. Proper disposal of unused drugs saves lives and protects the environment. Take-back programs are the best way to dispose of old drugs. They wanted to become a part of this community and we met to plan a charitable event and to set up a Thrivent Action Team Project with donations to be given to the Quartzsite Food Bank. With the help of Thrivent Action Team funds and volunteer mem- bers from their newly formed congregation a Desert Ride in Bike Show was held on February, 24, 2017 at Hasslers RV Park. It was a wonderful event with beautiful bikes competing in differ- ent categories for fi rst place, raffl e prizes, and a marvelous pulled pork lunch as well as grilled hot dogs. The weather was perfect, there was live music and great atten- dance. On March 9, 2017 we were invited to their service and Pastor Bill and his volunteers presented a $500.00 check to The Friends of the Quartzsite Food Bank. It was the fi rst of its kind event and hopefully will grow bigger and even better next year.
