Such hardships often give birth to the most compelling of stories, and this time period has been exploited via television and film to great dramatic ef- fect. Now, Hulu presents a look at these grim days of yore from a uniquely fe- male perspective, in a se- ries not only headlined by women, but created by women as well. The title of the series should give you a sense of the flavor of the show: "Harlots" premieres Wednesday, March 29, on the streamer, and stars Sa- mantha Morton ("Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them," 2016) as Margaret Wells, a mother and brothel owner. The series explores the lives of the women who work in (or are associated with) the brothel, and while there are plenty of steamy scenes, the series focuses as much on the economic, social and personal effects of the work the women do as it does on sex and dra- ma. Jessica Brown Findlay ("Downton Abbey") and Lesley Manville ("River") also star in the series, which is helmed by creators Alison Newman ("East- Enders") and Moira Buffini ("Jane Eyre," 2011) and di- rected exclusively by fe- male directors. You can binge the whole first sea- son of the drama starting Wednesday, March 29, on Hulu. WHAT'S NEW: "A Man Called Ove," an Oscar-nominated Swedish dramedy that will steal your heart, premieres Wednesday, March 29, on Amazon Prime. The prem- ise sounds bleak — Ove (Rolf Lassgard, "Dag"), so depressed by the loss of his wife and his job, attempts suicide over and over again, to no avail. He is desperate to leave this world after living a life marred by tragedy, but his new foreign neighbors keep turning to him for help, interrupting each at- tempt at self-harm; as he begrudgingly does what he can for the family, the spark of life slowly returns to Ove. It's a film about love and redemption, the underlying beauty of life and the power of simple acts of service. You'll laugh and you'll cry over and over — don't miss "A Man Called Ove," streaming Wednesday, March 29, on Amazon Prime.
